I grab the cage of rats. “Let’s get started, shall we?”

Chapter 49

Cali

Sawyer dumps me in his bathroom.

“Shower,” he snaps and stands in front of the door.

I shove my hands into his chest. “You have my ex in your basement? Did he watch us fuck, Sawyer?”

Sawyer watches me with disconnected eyes. All kinds of thoughts roll through me. My ex just watched me fuck these men. These men who kidnapped me, call me theirs, and make all kinds of confusing emotions fill me.

The ex who treated me like shit. Who I hoped I’d never see again.

My ex who’s tied up in the basement with psycho killers.

Fuck, why does he have to be here right now? My real life is intersecting with this fever dream I’ve been a part of and it throws me completely off.

I cross my arms. “Let me go. I want to see him.”

Sawyer's eyes remind me of the first time he fucked me. Wild and unpredictable. Strands of hair have fallen out of his bun. His eyes narrow. “He’s not your boyfriend anymore.”

Anger fills me. “I don’t care! You guys are sticking your fingers where they don’t belong!”

Sawyer’s jaw clenches. “He hit you. I think we’re absolutely where we belong.”

I start to argue, and Sawyer snarls, “I know he touched you. So forgive me if I don’t want him to live.”

Something odd skitters in my chest. Something warm. They’re fighting for me. No one has ever done that for me.

I shake myself. They’re going to kill him. I need to care about that. They’re going to kill him and lock me away like I’m meaningless in all this. Like I have no voice.

Sawyer just stands there, silent. I grip the marble counter and stand up straighter, “I want to see him.”

Sawyer gives me a deadly look and motions at the shower. “Get in.”

“No!” I stare into his eyes. “You’re just like him – not giving me a say in anything. Is that what you want?”

Rage dances in Sawyer’s eyes for a second. I force myself to stand tall. He can throw a fit all he wants. I’m tired of this.

We glare at each other, the bathroom eerily silent.

Fear, anger, hatred, and hopelessness roll through me all at once. I throw my hands up. “What, you think I can’t handle it? That I don’t deserve to get a say in the death of a man who hurt me?” I lower my voice. “If anyone deserves to hurt him, it’s me, Sawyer.”

Sawyer stares at me for a second. Nothing happens behind his eyes, but his jaw clenches the tiniest bit.

“Fine.” He steps out of the way.

I shove past him, racing to the basement. I rush toward the cell door and push it open.

I skid to a stop. Miles is standing over Ben with a cage over his bare abdomen. He’s…tying it to him?

Miles turns to look at me, as does Ryder. Both cock their heads at the exact same time with blank looks.

There’s silence for a second.

I cross my arms. “I’m not an annoyance that you just lock away when you want to mess with my life, Miles.”
