Ryder curls his lip at me. “Leave me alone, Sawyer. Don’t you have something better to do? With your girlfriend, maybe?”

Adrenaline runs through me. I lean over the desk into his face, shutting his computer. I know he doesn’t agree with Cali being here, but I need him to get on board. I just don’t know how to get him there. So, I pick a fight with him.

“I have something to do,” I hiss. “I’m doing it.”

Ryder gives me no reaction. I see his eyes flare with the challenges I’m throwing him, but he doesn’t take them. Instead, he pushes his chair back. “I need to run to town.”

Before he can get to the door, I round the desk on him. I put my hand on his chest and shove. “Don’t run from me.”

Faster than I can register, Ryder’s hand snakes around my neck, and he shoves me into the wall, pinning me there roughly and making me cough.

He leans into my face, voice low and angry. “Don’t push me, pup. I won’t be as careful with you as I was with your mark.”

“Do your worst.” I narrow my eyes in victory.

Ryder’s dark eyes bore into mine, and he snarls in my face, “Don’t you get it? I don’t want to play with you. Fuck. Off.”

He releases me like he can’t stand to touch me.

I freeze.

Ryder walks out of the room.

I stare after him, my blood turning to ice. He’s never once pushed me away. In fact, he is always the one chasing after Miles and me, never letting us keep secrets from him and fucking us into submission when we fight him.

A car door slams outside, and I jump. I see Ryder’s truck tear out of the driveway.

Fuck.

You should be used to this, Sawyer. People always leave. Even those who say they love you.

I swallow. Fuck that. Shut the fuck up.

I scratch my arm as I storm out of the room.

Chapter 55

Cali

Sawyer’s bedroom door bursts open while I’m trying to comb the snarls out of my hair in the bathroom mirror.

“Caliii,” a voice singsongs.

I feel Sawyer’s presence at the doorway. I refuse to look at him.

“Find anything useful?” he asks, his voice dark.

I force myself not to freeze. There’s no way he could know I was looking through his stuff. “What do you mean?”

He chuckles lowly. “Oh, bunny. I thought you knew better than to lie to me.”

I still don’t look at him.

Sawyer stalks behind me and leans his head down behind mine. He sucks in a breath. “You know what happens to liars, Cali?”

“I’m not a liar.” I throw my hair into a loose braid, trying to ignore him. Trying to ignore the way his very presence makes me hot.

Sawyer runs his fingers slowly up my spine. He chuckles again darkly. There’s no humor in it.
