With a firm push at the base of her spine, I pressed her down flat on the bed. We collapsed together. The length of my body covering hers — her back warm and smooth under my chest — as I worked, driving into her in a steady rhythm. She squirmed beneath me, panting and moaning. I put every scrap of will into holding off. A desperate need for release made my hips snap harder but I wouldn’t give in until I’d satisfied her. A cry left her lips. She shuddered underneath me. Her body melted against mine and her sweet gasps of ecstasy sent me over the edge with her. Pure explosive pleasure tore through me. I collapsed, hot and exhausted. Our bodies fused together with sweat.

Footsteps sounded in the corridor outside. The guests at this fancy hotel had probably heard our indecent cries down in the bar. I said a silent prayer that no one would make a complaint that could get back to Gabe Rivers. A deep sense of peace and awe filled my chest. I hadn’t had sex in so long. I’d forgotten what I’d been missing.

Melissa wriggled and rolled out from underneath me. Yawning, she stretched her arms high above her head. “Well, that was a first.”

Alarm went through me. “That was your first time?”

She burst out laughing. “No. That ship sailed a while ago. Usually, I only come if I’m on top. That was the first time it’s been different.”

I couldn’t stop the smile that crept onto my face. “You enjoyed that?”

She rolled her eyes, but her face brightened with amusement. “Men and their egos. Yes. It was amazing. The best I’ve had for a while. You blew my mind. The earth moved. You’ve set the standard for firefighters everywhere.”

She was teasing, but a warm glow of pride lit my chest. Despite being out of practice, at least I hadn’t lost my touch.

Her gaze dropped to my groin, and she nodded her approval. “You have that curve. It hits the spot. You’ve got a special peen. Good for you.” She raised a playful eyebrow and kissed the tip of my nose. “You’re one of God’s favorites. Use your gifts wisely.”

Amusement sparked within me. Who was this woman? I’d never met anybody so direct. She jumped out of bed and gathered her clothes from the floor, before she disappeared into the adjoining bathroom. Water hammered in the shower and filled my ears. What now? Even before I’d married Evelyn, I’d always been in long-term relationships. I’d never done casual. Was this going to be weird?

Melissa emerged from the shower, fully dressed. She pulled her long red hair into a damp ponytail.

“Well,” she smiled, breezily. “That was nice. Thanks.”

Was that it? “You could stay longer? I could order room service. We could have a drink?”

“No. Thanks.” She fastened a missed button on her collar and smoothed her smart dress.

I cleared my throat. “Could I take you out for dinner sometime?”

My chest tightened. What was I doing? I couldn’t date. It wasn’t fair on Brodie. I’d moved down to England from Scotland to give him roots and get him settled. The last thing he needed was his dad suddenly getting a girlfriend. The first time I’d had sex in five years and I was ready to abandon all my principles and fall at her feet. Sure, it had been mind-blowing sex, but I had to get a grip.?

A line appeared between her neat brows. “What? Like a date?”

I should have back-tracked, but tentative words slipped from my lips. “If you like…”

Her frown deepened. “You’re asking me out on a date, right now?”

I couldn’t stop my chuckle at her confusion. “Yes. I’m asking you out on a date. Is that a problem?”

She hesitated for a moment, before she clambered over the rumpled mess of sheets toward me. Amusement sparkled in her bright eyes but her voice was soft. “Yes. It’s a problem. Fun and done, remember?” Her lips were cool on my forehead as she landed a soft peck. “That was great, though. Good work.” She gave a mock serious salute. “Peace out.”???

Peace out? I opened my mouth to question her, but she sauntered swiftly to the door. She swung the door open and vanished without looking back. I collapsed back down on the bed.

So much for a quiet pint and a bag of peanuts. What the hell had just happened?

 Chapter 6

 Lana

Iknockedonthedoor to Dad’s house. Moonlight bathed the tiny patch of lawn. A car alarm wailed somewhere. Once, we’d lived in a castle near one of Scotland’s most remote and beautiful lochs. Yellow roses had climbed the walls and the water was so cold it stole your breath. It couldn’t be further from the small run-down house I stood in front of now. I knocked again. The door swung open. Mel’s steely eyes were red-ringed. I hadn’t seen her cry since Mum’s funeral.

“Are you okay? Have you been crying?”

Sniffing, she narrowed her eyes and swiped her nose with the back of her hand. “Is that my dress?”

The back of my neck itched. “What? No. Can I come in?”

“It’s late. Dad’s asleep.” Her gaze dropped to my shoes and her frown deepened. “Are those my Louboutins?”
