“I’m meeting someone.”
“I don’t care.”
He gestures toward a quiet corner of the pub before grabbing his beer and moving to a table for two.
I march over and stand towering over him. It takes all of my willpower not to slap him. “Where is my stuff?”
“Take a seat, and I’ll tell you.”
I pull a chair out and sit.
Then he says with a straight face, “I hocked it.”
I do a double take. “You hocked it? Where?”
“Buddy of mine has connections.”
My jaw clenches. “I feel like I don’t even know you. Why would you hock it? Why did you wait until the wedding to bail?”
He shakes his head. “I’m real sorry about the timing at the wedding. This isn’t easy to say, but I was trying to decide who I was supposed to be with. I didn’t know for sure until I was facing a lifetime with you. No offense.”
“Oh, no offense taken,” I snap. “Who is she? How long has this been going on?”
“About a month.”
“You blew up our lives for someone you just met?”
He shrugs. “It’s not like I planned it. It just happened.”
“I’ll be sending you the paperwork to dissolve our business partnership and a bill for the stuff you hocked without my permission.”
“That money is gone.”
“Already?”
“Yeah, I needed it to put a deposit down on Sheila’s llama farm. It was a grand gesture to convince her of my sincerity.”
“Who the hell is Sheila?”
“My esthetician.”
My eyes widen. “The woman who waxes your balls?”
“She has many skills.” He looks past me and waves. “She’s here now. I told you this wasn’t the best time.”
I turn to see a stunning brunette in a flowing blouse and skinny jeans walking toward us.
“Am I interrupting?” she asks innocently. Like she doesn’t know Dave dumped me on our wedding day.
“No, baby, stick around,” Dave says. He turns to me. “You need to get your stuff out of my apartment by next weekend. Sheila’s moving in.”
“Who will take care of the llamas?” I ask sarcastically.
“My brother will live there,” Sheila says. “For us, it’ll be a country escape.”
I stand so fast I knock my chair backward. “You messed with the wrong woman.”
Dave puts out a placating hand. “Rowan, it was a tough decision between the two of you, if that helps.”
