“I want to eat healthy, but it’s just so boring.”

I laugh. “So how’s it working out here?”

“Oh, Cooper, I’m so embarrassed.”

“Why?”

Then she tells me how she messed up both wedding consultations yesterday and feared she was going to be fired after just one day.

“First days can be rough,” I say. “You’re just getting the hang of things.”

“Your mom stuck me in the office permanently for behind-the-scenes work.”

I shake my head, smiling. “I’m sure she’ll let you out for good behavior.”

“I guess I wasn’t ready to relive the whole bridal experience.”

“Can’t blame you.”

She goes back to her lunch, so I do the same. After a while she says, “I owe your mom for my wedding bill. It’s thousands, so I guess I’ll be here a while working off my debt.”

“You make it sound like you’re stuck. I’m sure you can work out a payment plan. She wants you to get back on your feet. That’s why she offered a flexible job.”

“Did you tell her all the details?”

“Yeah. Before Sunday dinner.”

She frowns. “How many other people did you tell?”

I hold up a palm. “Just her and only because I knew she could help you. She’s so well connected in town and the surrounding area. I didn’t know she’d offer to let you live with her and offer you a job. That was all her.”

“I don’t want to broadcast the fact that I was screwed over by the man I was about to marry.”

“She won’t say a word, and neither will I. You can count on Mackenzie and Harper being discreet too. Well, Harper might leap to your defense, but if you ask her not to say anything, she won’t.”

“Wow. I guess it’s not exactly a secret anymore.”

“A select few are in the know. Do you miss the city?”

“Yeah, I do. I’m a fish out of water here. Seems like everyone knows everyone. The pace is slower.” She smiles. “Still getting used to how friendly everyone is. Why are you so easy to talk to?”

I grin. “Guess it’s all that listening I do at the bar. Boy, can people talk with a few drinks in them.”

“I’m sure.”

“And I want to listen to you.”

Her hand goes to her neck. “I don’t want you to get the wrong idea. The other day, that thing that happened—”

“You kissed me.”

“No, you kissed me.”

“That’s not how I remember it.”

Her brows scrunch together. “I’m not sure how that happened, but it was a mistake.”

“You kissed me by accident?”
