“He was my assigned groomsman at a friend’s wedding. Drop-dead gorgeous, but I’m afraid a little boring. He’s a lawyer at his father’s law firm.”
“Maybe he won’t be so boring once you get to know him.”
“I just need to see if drop-dead gorgeous means chemistry. I had a little too much of the open bar at the wedding to tell if it was true chemistry or drink-fueled lust. Have I mentioned how much I hate the forced coupledom at weddings?” She adjusts her pants suit and unbuttons the top button. “How do I look?”
“Sexy?”
She laughs. “Not sure why that came out as a question, but I’ll take it. Harper’s working late with a midnight deadline. TV remote’s all yours tonight. Enjoy the power!”
Felix walks in with a shaky tail as he rubs against a chair leg.
“There’s my little meow-meow,” Mackenzie coos.
He goes to her, and she picks him up, cuddling her face against his. She makes kissy noises at him and sets him down.
“Bye!”
“Bye! Hope you have fun.”
She leaves, and I turn to Felix. “We can figure out my life or binge-watch something more dramatic than my life.”
He stares at me with a hint of skepticism.
“Well, we can hope there’s something more dramatic. Geez.”
I lead the way to the living room and nearly trip as he dashes ahead of me and then circles back between my legs. “Again, I can’t pet you if you kill me.”
There’s a second TV in the living room in case Harper hogs the TV in the front room to play her favorite fantasy video game. After surfing channels for a while, I start feeling restless. I don’t want to sit home alone on a Friday night. My life’s not over because Dave’s not in it.
“I’m going out,” I announce to Felix as I shift him off me and get up.
He gives me a perturbed look for ruining his Friday night.
“I’ll be back.”
He’s already moved on, leaping to the warm spot on the sofa where I just was.
I make the short walk to Happy Endings. It’s okay to hang with Cooper as friends. I need a friend, and he’s been a good one to me.
But when I get there, Cooper’s leaning across the bar in deep conversation with a brunette woman in a tight skirt.
I avoid them and go to the far corner of the bar to observe. She’s young, beautiful, and delighted by whatever he’s saying. He’s smiling, looking charming as ever. I’mnotjealous. Why would I be jealous of a friend?
He catches my eye, and I quickly look away. I don’t want him to think I’m spying.
A moment later, he’s in front of me. “I was hoping you’d stop by tonight. What can I get you?”
The beautiful brunette joins us, leaning across the bar to kiss his cheek. “Always a happy ending with you. Don’t forget about my showing!”
He inclines his head. “I’ll be there. Good to see you again, Rachel.”
Rachel flashes a smile and heads out.
“She seems nice,” I say.
“What can I get you, beautiful?”
“Don’t do that.”
