“They’ll treat you just the same. They like you for you. Don’t blow up your life here because you’re mad at me.”
“I’m not mad, I’m hurt.” She looks to the ceiling, blinking rapidly. “You broke my already fragile heart.”
I reach for her. “Rowan, I’m sorry.”
She pulls away, shaking her head. “Bye.” She slips out the door.
I sit there for a long devastating moment. Rowan did exactly what Brianna did to me. I fixed her life, and she dumped me. I knew better.
I scrub a hand over my face. Dammit all to hell. I miss Rowan already.

Rowan
It’s time to untangle my life from Cooper’s. I go to Ludbury House and find Hailey in her office.
“Hi, Hailey.”
She jumps up. “Hi! I wasn’t expecting you to come in today. How did it go in court?”
“I won.”
“That’s great!” She steps closer, studying my expression. “Why don’t you seem happy?”
A lump of emotion clogs my throat. “I, uh, guess it’s been a stressful day. I won the full amount, best I could’ve hoped for. I’ll give you a large payment toward my wedding.”
“We can stick to our payment plan. You’ll need that money.”
“And I need to resign.”
“Why?”
“Because I’m going back to the city.”
“Did you get a new job?”
“No.”
“Did something happen with Cooper?”
My face crumples. “I need to go.”
“Honey, I can see you’re upset. Stay and talk about it. I’m sure together we can come up with a solution.”
“You’re his mom. You can’t be objective.”
“Okay, you don’t have to talk to me. How about Mackenzie?”
“His sister?”
“Harper.”
I blow out a breath. “This town is filled with people who are either related to Cooper or friends or adoring fans.”
“What do you mean adoring fans?”
I wave briskly. “You know, all the other women he rescued who constantly come into the bar and hang all over him.”
