I huff. “Are you going to pretend you don’t know me?”

She puts her hand on my cheek, smiling. “I’m going to pretend I don’t know what an amazing lover you are until the coast is clear and I can have my way with you again.”

“That sounds okay,” I grumble.

“Let’s get takeout,” she says cheerfully. “I can’t spend the night though. I was almost late to work last time.”

I almost say I’ll set an alarm, but then I realize just how much I want her to spend the night, which is not light and casual at all.

“Sure, whatever,” I say.

“Are you mad?”

I spread my palms wide. “I’ve got a sexy beautiful woman in my bedroom. What’s there to be mad about?”

I head to the bathroom and shut the door a little harder than I mean to. I can’t believe I’m the one hoping for a relationship. Some real role reversal here. Women always want that from me. Sometimes I feel the same way, sometimes not. But Rowan—I stop myself. She made it clear she wasn’t ready.

I just have to wait it out. In three weeks, after her dad helps win her small claims court case, that’s when we’ll see how attached to me she really is. Or not.

I think Cooper’s upset about something. Then I remember we’re not in a relationship, so I relax and finish getting dressed.

The bathroom door whips open. He glances at me and then grabs his clothes and gets dressed. Someone should make a sculpture or painting of his muscular naked body. I would stare at it all day.

He walks toward me, looking serious. I gulp. He gives me a quick kiss and steps back. “You should go.”

It’s like a splash of cold water in the face. “Why?”

“Boundaries. Best not to get too attached.”

Hurt, I turn away. “Right. Casual.”

He turns my face back toward his. “That’s what we agreed on.”

I scowl. Way to ruin a great after-sex buzz. I thought we were going to get takeout and hang out. He can’t wait to get me out the door. “Right. See ya at the party.”

I stride to the front door, open it, and Cooper’s hand shoots out, shutting it. I can feel his heat at my back. Every nerve ending tingles in anticipation. He’s going to ask me to stay.

His voice is gravelly by my ear. “You forgot your purse.”

I turn and grab my purse. “Thank you,” I bite out.

He nods and walks away. Well, I can take a hint. I yank open the door and walk out.

Why does it feel like we just had our first fight?

“We are so damn cute!” Mackenzie exclaims, showing me and Harper the selfie we just took at home in our three blind mice costumes.

“So damn hot, you mean,” Harper says. “Brilliant way to wear a little black dress to a costume party.”

“You’re very creative,” I say. We’re also wearing mouse-ear headbands and sunglasses.

“I try,” Mackenzie says.
