He was officially losing his mind.

He shook his head trying to clear the extra noise from his head like it was snow he could shake off. He couldn’t. Every thought was of her. Every thought was of how he should be the one touching her. He should be the one holding her and telling her she was safe.

Instead it was some old, hard-nosed, bartender.

“I hate him.”

Tor started their sled and took off down the snow-packed road. The engine on Ryder’s sled roared to life as well.

Saul couldn’t hear Tor laugh, but the way Tor’s chest shook just enough to denote amusement—made Saul wish he could breathe fire.

He shouldn’t hate Liam, but he did. He’d gotten to help Lorelei. And he’d gotten to touch her.

Saul rolled his neck and breathed deeply. His behavior was petty and he was letting thesoul calloverwhelm him when mostly he should be feeling grateful that Lorelei was still alive.

That they had the chance to start fresh like she’d said.

He wanted that.

A chance with her. A chance for them.

The trees raced by, shadows of white and brown and grey. The motor on the sled drowned out all the noise of the dragons. They were far enough now, not to hear the chanting and shouts.

Would the dragons all leave now that they had Novik’s mate?

Saul briefly wondered about the women back at the bunker. Would they leave or stay? He was pretty sure two of them were magick-benders too. One had been a human. At least he was pretty sure.

They took a right fork in the road and he could see the bridge over the river. They were still several miles downriver of the cabins the Tribe had built over the past year, but the original cabin, the one where he now lived alone, was still several more miles north.

Lorelei

The trip seemed to take forever. She had no idea where they were going. Maybe back to the cabins where Saul had taken her before? It was dark, except for the moonlight. She didn’t recognize any landmarks on the way to the cabin. Nothing looked familiar.

But it didn’t matter.

As long as there was a way to clean off and a comfortable bed to sleep on, she didn’t care.

Her body hurt from the tips of her toes all the way to the roots of her hair where Rivian had tried to wrench it from her scalp.

She attempted to swing her leg over the back of the thing Liam called a snow machine. But her body didn’t cooperate. Her muscles were tight and achy. Her clothes were crusted with her own blood.

But it was over.

Rivian was gone.

The dragons were dealing with the rest of his warriors.

They had saved the hostages. Saved Novik’s mate.

Tears gathered in her eyes, threatening to spill over. It was so much. Everything was so much. The pain. The memories. The fear that all of it was going to repeat itself. She’d almost lost Saul to Rivian.

If the dragons and the others hadn’t shown up when they did…she and Saul would both be dead.

“You’re safe. These guys may be some kind of aliens, but they’re honorable. Some of the best men I’ve ever known.”

“You know I’m one of them, right?” Lorelei gave the gruff male a slight smile.
