“Nothing to talk about. We’re not anything anymore. We just live in the same town,” Dan said. “The family needs to move on because we have.”

“Right, so all that tension between you is entirely natural for two people who were once a couple, but now just live in the same town?” Sawyer said, crossing his arms like he was settling in for a nice long chat.

“What are you two talking about?” Zoe appeared in the bedroom doorway. “What tension?”

“Nothing,” Dan said.

“Leah,” Sawyer said at the same time.

“Why’d you have to go and say that in front of her?” Dan protested.

“Her being your sister who loves you?” Zoe snapped, now standing next to Sawyer and folding her arms.

“Let it drop. There is nothing to discuss,” Dan said.

“What smells so bad?” Zoe asked, sniffing.

“It’s damp in here. Now focus,” Sawyer said. “Are you or are you not still interested in Leah Reynolds?”

“Fuck off,” Dan said.

“I’ll take that as a yes,” Sawyer said.

“What actually happened between you two?” Zoe asked.

You didn’t notice the similarities when they weren’t standing next to each other, but his sister and oldest brother were alike in a lot of ways, Dan thought. Plus, there was that persistence his mother said was a good trait to have… until it wasn’t.

“I’m going to build a tree house,” he muttered, stomping from the room.

Chapter 12

Looking at the cookies, she couldn’t believe she’d made them…. Well, she and Dan had, but still. They didn’t look anything like the little turd balls she’d attempted to make many years ago.Maybe I can bake for Hudson?

Leah didn’t want to think about the fact that Dan had seen her panicking. Not only that, but he’d also been kind and gentle with her until she’d calmed. He’d helped her bake.

So far, avoiding him didn’t seem to be working.

“We found a table that needed a few nails but seems sturdy enough,” Zoe said as she stepped outside. “It may need a coat of stain as well.”

“I can do that,” she said quickly. “I have food and coffee ready for everyone,” Leah added.

“Cool. You go to the tree house, and I’ll tell the others.”

“Tree house?”

“That way.” Zoe pointed to the right, and Leah headed that way.

She found Sawyer, Dan, and Hudson.

“What’s going on?” she asked.

“They’re making me a tree house, Aunt Leah,” Hudson said, smiling. “Isn’t it cool?”

Looking up, she saw a platform had been built above her.

“We’re going to have a rope ladder that I can pull up when I want to be alone up there,” her nephew added.

“But it’s not finished yet, bud. We need to make some sides too,” Dan said.
