“What family? Your dad and I are your only family.”
“You stopped being my family the day I turned eighteen. And even before then, Leighton and Lynton were my family. You and Tyler were never really family to us.”
I see a flash of emotion cross her face. Good. I hope that some part of her feels something and that feeling is pain. Because that’s what she did to us for as long as I can remember. I don’t have even one memory of her hugging me or telling me she loved me.
“Oh, and you should tell Leighton to keep an eye on that brat Davis. One day he might not be there.”
“What the fuck does that mean?” I snap at her.
Marcia smiles at me. “You’ll find out, probably sooner than later, but you’ll definitely find out.”
I spend the next thirty minutes trying to get her to tell me what the fuck she’s talking about. But she won’t tell me. And I finally have to give up. The only answers I’ve gotten is that she hates us and they were selling us and Felicity to the cartel. She won’t say which cartel, but I know the guys are already trying to figure it out. I turn and look at Marcia before I leave.
“I feel sad for you. I wish you knew how much we just wanted you to love us when we were little. We didn’t need anything else. No fancy clothes or house. Just your love. Just a hug and kiss. That’s it. I don’t wish anything bad on you. Because I know that one day you’ll realize what you lost. So I hope the rest of your life is what you deserve.”
Marcia stares at me with no emotion in her face. I turn and open the door, Felicity is waiting for me on the other side. I wrap my arms around her and hold her tight. She’s all I need.
CHAPTER TWENTY
Levi
“What can I do to help you?” Felicity asks me softly.
“You’re already doing it.” I sniffle as I hold onto her.
We walk back upstairs and outside to where Leighton and Lynton are. They both come over to us and hug me.
“It’s okay to cry, even if it’s over them, Levi. We’re going to heal from this together. And we have a new family to help us get through it all,” Leighton says to me.
I nod and hug both of them. “I know I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for the two of you.”
“I don’t know if any of us would be here if we didn’t have each other,” Lynton says to me.
“Well, that’s something we don’t have to wonder about. It’s always been the three of us and it always will be,” Leighton adds.
“Leigh, you need to know that Marcia said that you need to watch Davis. She said someday he might not be here. I tried to get her to tell me what that meant, but she wouldn’t tell me.”
Leighton screams for her husband, Valentino. He comes running over.
“What the fuck,” he pants as he looks at all of us.
“Tell him what you just said,” she says to me.
I tell him everything Marcia said to me about Davis.
“Fuck. Now I know who Lorraine is. Felicity said that when your parents showed up at the motel, they mentioned a Lorraine. It didn’t really hit me then, but I get it now—” Valentino says.
“Kayla’s mother. Fuck.” Leighton frowns. “So wait. Are you saying you think this was about Davis too?”
“I do. I think that Tyler and Marcia are working with Lorraine. Marcia said that they were trading us to the cartel for wiping their debt. And Lorraine wanted to sell Davis before. It makes sense. They were going to turn all of us over to them. Or they were going to use Davis as a ransom to get our Lake Renegade family to pay them. When I met them in the parking lot, they talked about Enea and how they knew who he was,” I tell them.
I can see the anger in Valentino’s and my sisters’ faces.
“Maybe we should talk to the council and ask them to give all of them to the cartel instead,” I suggest.
“I’m sure that’s being discussed right now. Don’t worry, if you want to know what happens, you need to ask. They’ll tell you if you ask, but if you don’t want to know? Don’t ask,” Valentino says.
“Oh, I definitely want to fucking know,” Leighton says as Lynton and I nod.
