Chapter 1
Bea
My eyes kept moving from onekingto another while my heart filled with uncontained anxiety. The feeling that I had just entered a minefield was ruling over all my power of decision.
I wasn’t shocked.
Shock is an understatement.
I was almost gagging for air as the deepest conspiracy against me seemed to be finally revealed.
But why?
How?
I wanted so badly to ask them, although they seemed to be ignoring my presence completely, embracing each other as if this was some long-lost family reunion.
Strangely, even Cole appeared excited. And that, without exploiting my limits to their very edge. Nonetheless, he was still playing with my nerves, although not intentionally - this time.
I couldn’t help noticing the limp in Brax’s left leg, as he took a few steps in Cole’s direction to give him an almost fatherly pat on the shoulder.
I was in sinking in shit and was acknowledging it with every single one of their friendly gestures.Deep shit,indeed,as I noticed even Ferris was snapping himself away from his usual melancholy and smiling back at them as if they brought a new ray of hope in his so deeply plunged into darkness world.
They knew each other. That was a certainty.
But did they also know howIfit into all of this? That was the thought that troubled me most. The thought that made everything a hundred times more difficult.
Continuing with the unusually warm attitude, Brax placed his hands on Ferris’s shoulders, kissing both sides of his cheeks ‘You were unreachable, even for a man as myself. What made you change your mind?’ he asked in a sad whisper, revealing a sorrow that I knew he always hid behind his anger.
‘I... I didn’t change my mind,’ Ferris’s answer remained floating, somewhere in the air above us, hiding a truth that could only be understood by the one it was meant for.
Still, I needed to know what was happening before my own assumptions could cause me a heart attack. Good or bad, it was the moment of truth... or at least for a part of it, because when it came to the whole truth, I wasn’t so sure I could speak it out loud myself.
‘How... How do you know each other?’ countless conspiracy theories were circling wildly in my mind. This was it! I was preparing for them to confess to the game they all played with me.
‘Are you fucking kidding me!?’ Cole exclaimed with unrestrained excitement ‘Brax and Ferris were the kings of EMA. These guys are legends!’
I drew my gaze a little to the left to fall on Brax’s frowning eyebrows, and slowly slid to Ferris’s tightening jawline as he was biting back questions of his own.
How the hell did I think that opening my mouth to speak could be a good idea?
As strange as it may have been, while Brax and Ferris’s gazes were harboring murky shadows of doubt, Cole’s devious blue orbs were gleaming with fierce lust. And that puzzled me completely!
‘Couldn’t have made a better choice,’ Brax grinned, eyes gleaming at Cole like he was his finest creation.
My curious nature couldn’t hold back unasked questions any longer ‘What choice!?’
‘We gave him the keys to our kingdom,’ Ferris reached for Cole’s shoulders, wrapping a fatherly arm around them, tugging him towards his own body. ‘Brax and I were seniors when Cole was in his first year at the Academy, so when the time came, we decided he was the most fitting leader to rule in our place.’
So, Cole was their protege. Go figure.
Some people have no luck. But I seemed to be sinking into the abyss of fucking misfortune.
The three kings had finally met, and it was just a matter of time before they would start teaming up against me. If they hadn’t done so already.
‘Funny for us to be meeting like this,’ Cole’s blank stare turned towards me, expecting the full explanation for their get-together. I knew the question even before he asked it and if any doubt could have clouded my mind, the death glares coming from the other two kings convinced me that it was about time to give some answers.
‘I have crucial motives to bring you here. This is much harder for me than it is for you.’
