Jameson
The front door opened and shut with a force that rattled the entire house. Since my phone had alerted me to movement, I’d already checked the cameras and knew that it was Jen walking through the door. I hadn’t been on alert, not until the door shut the way it had, anyway.
“I will kill you now,” he said with a fire in his eyes like I couldn’t believe.
I stared at him dumbfounded because it was clear that I’d done something but was clueless as to what that was.
“You have no idea, do you?” he asked and I shook my head, not blinking once because I was a little frightened and didn’t want to take my eyes off of him, not even for a second. “Fuck!”
He stomped toward me, phone in hand. It wasn’t even a minute later that I had images of myself and Nick in front of me.
Images that looked a lot more intimate than the moment had been.
But I assumed to an outsider at the right angle, it could have looked as if Nick and I were sharing something reserved only for lovers.
“Tell me this isn’t what it looks like.”
I tuned Jen out and scrolled through the numerous photos that showcased Nick and me very close.
I’d only been checking his wound.
I kicked myself for not seeing this coming.
I shouldn’t have touched him, not even to make sure he was okay.
He was going to hate me for this.
And Jen was going to kill me.
Not that he really could, but that wasn’t the point.
My eyes lingered on one particular image for longer than was probably professional. You could barely see Nick’s tilted face over my shoulder and from the angle, his eyes almost looked closed. Damn, it really did look like we were making out. Which hadn’t helped me at all since I’d wished I could have kissed him then. I wished I had saidfuck itand done it anyway. I nearly had and I was sure Nick hadn’t missed that very moment.
But I hadn’t.
Still, it blew up in my face anyway.
Fuck, Nick was going to lose his shit.
And I would put money on him throwing me out in order to put as much distance between him and this latest scandal.
“What the hell?!” Nick said as he rushed out of his special room and peered over the railing. His eyes were wide with panic. Obviously, he hadn’t missed the dramatic slam of the door or Jen yelling death threats at me. “Jen, what the fuck?”
“Oh, so you don’t know?” Jen responded, snatching his phone out of my hand before rushing up the stairs.
Nick’s eyes met mine and all I could do was shake my head.‘I’m sorry’was right there stuck in my throat, but even as my mouth parted, the words wouldn’t slip free.
Jen handed the phone over to Nick and the moment it hit him, he looked as if he couldn’t breathe.
I was rooted in place. The urge to rush to him was strong, but the broken look in his eyes as he looked at me again held me still. He didn’t want me near him now, and I couldn’t blame him.
“What happened to your face?” Jen asked as he grabbed Nick’s chin and turned his face to the side.
“I had a little fall and scraped my cheek on a rock,” Nick answered defensively. “That’s what’s going on in those photos, Jameson is cleaning it up. That’s all!”
“Well, clearly someone knew what they were doing, because these look like—”
