“I know what they fucking look like!” Nick roared. “It was innocent.”

“Honey, nothing is innocent when you have a sexy man up in your face,” Jen said and though he was trying to break the tension, I could hear the strain in his voice.

“Not the time, Jen,” Nick snapped. “We have to fix this.”

There was a small pain in my chest, but I shouldn’t have expected anything different.

Yeah, we’d shared a moment there when I held his face. I knew it and I wouldn’t deny it. I had broken away because I knew he wasn’t ready. Clearly. But it hurt to have him jump so quickly in the direction of sweeping it under the rug.

Nick yanked his phone out of his pocket and after frowning down at the screen, he hit a button on the side and dropped his arm. A moment later, the same thing happened again. And when it happened a third time in a row, Nick shoved his phone at Jen.

“Oh, and now he’s calling me,” Jen said looking at his phone.

“Don’t fucking answer it,” Nick warned.

It was odd watching all of this happen from the outside. Though I did feel like the whole thing was my fault. I promised I’d protect him, but what I hadn’t realized was that he needed to be protected fromme.

“You’re going to have to talk to him, he’ll just keep calling.”

“I have more important things to deal with right now,” Nick said with disdain in his tone. “My father can just deal with being sent to voicemail. He knows how it goes and all the clean-up I have to do.”

I stood there dumbfounded and unsure of what I could do to help. Though, I was sure I’d only make it worse no matter what I tried.

I guess it didn’t matter, because without warning, they both were tucked away in Nick’s special room. The door was firmly shut, an obvious sign that neither of them wanted to deal with my presence.

“What’s going on?” Austin said as he came out after the smoke had cleared out of the open air. “What happened?”

I reached for my phone and with ease, pulled up the pictures that Jen had shoved in my face. I did the same to Austin.

“I fucked up,” I said gruffly. My throat was dry and raw. And I felt as if I had a lump that I couldn’t swallow down.

“Holy fuck! Did you make out with him?” Austin yelled in shock.

I turned my head and glared at him.

“Oh, okay. Right. So this is one of those awkward situations that gets taken the wrong way. Got it.”

Yep, I wanted to punch him.

But sadly, I needed him more than I wanted to hurt him.

I was worried that I’d have to step back from this job, and oddly, that was the last thing I wanted to do now.

“Let them handle it. Jen knows how to deal with this stuff. It’s not the first scandal he’s had, though he does have less than a lot of other stars.” I glared at him again to let him know he wasn’t helping the situation. “I’m just saying.”

I turned and walked away from him before I took my anger out on his face.

“Wait,” he called after me. “I was about to come get you before the storm hit.”

I could hear the seriousness in his tone, so I wiped everything away and faced him again.

Austin walked to the office and I followed him.

Once we were behind closed doors, he handed me the tablet.

I played in immediately.

It was feed from the cameras outside of the house.
