I was starting to think that I didn’t even want to figure him out, it might send me to a place I couldn’t come back from.
Once I could no longer avoid the inevitable without seeming like a huge dick, I turned and took the empty seat where he’d left my food. It wasn’t a few moments later that Jameson came around and took the seat at the very end with a steaming plate of his own.
My eyes cut to the left and then to the right.
So there were three spaces between Austin and myself, and only one separating Jameson and me. It didn’t go unnoticed how he’d placed himself as far away from Austin as possible without having to leave the room to eat. That was how it felt anyway.
Okay, I was intrigued. Yep, I couldn’t lie about that. These two worked together, and one would assume that this wasn’t their first job as a team. But I could pick up something strained filling up in the room around us.
Luckily, Jen chose that moment to enter the house and saved me from sitting here awkwardly.
“Oh, look at you, eating normal people food,” he said with a playful smile as he slid up in the space at my side and rested against the island. Before I knew what was coming, he snatched up a clump of scrambled eggs before popping it into his mouth. “Oh, that’s good.”
Jameson moved to stand and I guess Jen got why right away because he told the grumpy man to sit back down and that he’d been fed already this morning. By a ‘sexy man in a leather thong and nipple rings,’ in case any of us needed the clear visual. No, I hadn’t wanted it but I was used to it by now.
Austin seemed mildly interested in Jen’s story, or he was trying to play it cool. I couldn’t tell which it was and I didn’t think I really cared either. I leaned back in my chair so I could glance at Jameson out of the corner of my eye without being too obvious. His face didn’t give much away, but the fact that he was giving Jen full eye contact and not looking as if he wanted to kill the man had me a bit stunned.
I also… didn’t like it. Not that I could think of a reason why I didn’t.
And when I saw his lips flicker up for a split second, I got this gross feeling in my gut that I would have denied was jealousy.
They hadn’t been in my house two full days yet and they were seriously messing me up.
“Okay,” Jen said, turning on his ‘get down to it’ tone. “So your guy, uh, Remedy, is coming back today to install the new motion detectors and cameras at the edge of the property, right?”
“Remy,” Austin supplied and Jen shrugged like it wasn’t a big deal he’d messed up the person’s name.
“Yeah, him. How long will that take, do you know?”
“I think he said about four hours to get everything placed and hooked up,” Austin answered, looking at Jameson for confirmation.
To which Jameson gave an affirmative nod of his head, without the deadly glare in his partner’s direction for once.
“Okay, sounds good,” Jen said as he pulled out his tablet like he was already done with this conversation and moving on to the next thing on his list. “Oh, one more thing.” He left a long moment for a dramatic pause. “Would he be interested in taking me home tonight?”
Austin’s mouth fell open like he had intended to respond but ended up not knowing what to say.
“No? Well, okay, then. A boy’s gotta ask.” Jen shrugged nonchalantly again, then he walked off, the whole thing already forgotten, I was sure. “I have some calls to make, I’ll be in the office. Nickie Boy, I’ll need you in about thirty. Don’t hide from me today. I don’t feel like hunting you down.”
He kept going but his words trailed off and eventually faded away. Which was probably a good thing since I heard something about his ass being ‘too sore to walk all over the damn house.’
“He’s a ball of energy, isn’t he?” Austin said with humor in his tone.
“One of a kind,” I replied with a smile.
“While we have you, mind if I go over some rules before I hit the hay?”
I wanted to push back so hard but instead, I took a deep breath and nodded. I would listen and follow their rules even if I didn’t want to. I knew it was only my stubborn side coming out. It wasn’t like I had much of a life and I rarely left the house, so whatever they were going to lay on me probably wouldn’t hinder how I lived too much.
“Jen will keep us up to date on any big events you have coming up. We have a plan in place for those since he knows you wouldn’t be willing to cancel.”
“Hold up,” I said my hand going in the air like I needed him to pause his thoughts.
Why would I need to cancel?
Why would that even be something they’d want me to do?
Everything was fine, right? So as long as I had a security detail then there shouldn’t have been a reason not to go to any of them.
