“When do we start?” Austin asked with too much enthusiasm. Considering he spent practically all of his off time in this very building, I assumed this was about as exciting as it got for him.
And sadly, it might have been the same thing for me as well. Though I wasn’t looking forward to it like he was.
Did I want to do this? No, I didn’t. But would.
“Tomorrow,” Reed answered calmly. I could feel his eyes on me but I didn’t look up. “I want both of you to pack for an extended stay. I’m not clear on how long this will take. They are expecting you at ten in the morning.”
With my pointer finger, I snapped the folder shut.
One deep, calming breath, and then I looked up at Reed.
He could see it written all over my face, I was sure. I wasn’t happy about this job but I’d do it.
“Everything you need to know is in that file. Remy will be helping out too. He’ll drop by tomorrow afternoon to assess the security they have up. If there’s anything else you need, don’t hesitate to reach out to me,” Reed said, wrapping this whole thing up.
Austin bounced out of the room, folder clutched tightly in his hand like he was afraid of dropping it. I rose, Reed’s eyes on me the entire time. He walked over to me and I waited for him to say what he needed to.
“You good with this?” he asked, hand going to my shoulder.
For a long moment, I got lost staring off into space. I wasn’t good with this. I didn’t want a job like this, especially not with a person likehim. But the pleading look behind Reed’s eyes had me taking in a deep breath before giving him a firm nod.
“Thank you,” he said to me with a firm squeeze on the shoulder.
I shook my head as I tucked the stupid folder under my arm and turned toward the door.
He didn’t need to thank me.
Reed had saved me, but at this point, I didn’t feel like saved was really the right word. It didn’t work for a man like me. There was nothing to save. No miracle to bring me back.
But Reed held out hope that one day I’d see the magic light or something. That things would turn around for me and I’d find happiness again.
Life had taken my soul. It had burned my heart to the point there wasn’t a piece of it that could be salvaged.
Yet, somehow, I was still here. I was still stumbling alive through each day.
