Right before my very eyes, I saw something strange flicker inside of him. Right there in his gaze, it was like I could see a crack tear right through that concrete wall he kept up. It wasn’t much, but I watched as that crack grew just enough for the top corner of that wall to slide right off and hit the floor only to shatter into a million pieces.

I didn’t know what his words meant exactly, but stopping me was more important to him than anything had been for a while.

“Actually, I found them. It was my idea,” Jen said. “I never went to your father about it.”

“What?” I asked sounding very confused and a little dumb.

“Um, I guess we need to talk.” I didn’t like that slight hint of sadness and anxiety in Jen’s tone. It told me that there was something more going on here, something he’d been keeping from me.

I blinked at his words as they sunk into my head. I kept my gaze locked onto Jameson’s because I didn’t want to look away.

“I’m good,” I told him, though it was far too late now to go chasing after my father even if I wasn’t.

Jameson’s words still rung in my ears and I didn’t think they’d be leaving anytime soon.

He released me, his eyes going to the floor as if he was ashamed of what had just happened. He looked more broken now, if that was even possible.

Jen pushed his way between us, cutting the tension, but just barely. I followed him back inside the room and waited as he paced. To my surprise, Jameson and Austin both stepped in behind me. I glanced over long enough to see Austin giving a wide-eyed look of shock in Jameson’s direction. He was staring at the man as if he didn’t know who he was. As if the handful of words that had come out of Jameson’s mouth had shaken him just as much as it had me.

“What’s going on?” I asked with a noticeable hint of irritation in my tone. I got that whatever he kept from me he thought it was for my own good. And hiring bodyguards was his solution to the problem and the best way he thought to keep me safe. But the fact that he thought I needed extra security to keep me safe, well, that worried me.

The longer he kept quiet, the faster my heart began to race.
