“Figured it might give you the motivation to make sure you don’t.” He shrugged.

“I’m glad you’re here with me,” I whispered but couldn’t look at him. Maybe it wasn’t the best idea to bring him along given all the drama that surrounded us, but I needed him. “I want to touch you.”

I couldn’t believe I admitted that out loud. Oh, fuck! What if there were cameras in here or some kind of listening device? Had I just royally fucked up?

“You’re safe. I swept the room before you came in,” he told me and I breathed a sigh of relief. “I’m here for whatever you need. And, for the record, I wish I could hug you because you look like you could really use one.”

“Thank you,” I told him still unable to meet his eyes. “It means a lot that you said that.”

Ugh, why was I so fucking stupid and pathetic?!

The door opened and Jen came in.

“Ten minutes,” Jen warned me. Then someone came to whisk us away to the green room where I waited to be collected and shoved into the spotlight. Jameson couldn’t come out on the set with me, of course, and given everything that was going on, we decided it was best if he stayed back in the green room. Austin would be the one waiting on the sidelines, keeping watch. Honestly, the chances of what’s her name being here were slim. I was worried but I wasn’t freaked out. I figured it was safe.

Ten minutes went by like seconds.

I waited on the spot, then once I was given my cue, I stepped out onto the set, waving and smiling big as I made the walk to the chair I was supposed to take.

“Nick Sterling, welcome,” Adam Lars, the host of the show said as he stood to shake my hand.

“Hey, Adam,” I replied.

“Good to have you here, tonight.”

It was all super cheesy and over the top, but I’d expected it, just like everyone else.

“Thanks for having me.”

“So, I hear you have a movie coming out soon…”

And everything became loud. The lights became blinding. I struggled to remember what I had to say. I said something, I was sure of it. It always felt like my brain went on autopilot during these things. It went by in a blur.

Until the host asked me that unplanned question that I’d been waiting for.

That was when my mind and focus went blank.

And as I struggled to pull myself together enough to answer properly, all I could think was how I wished Jameson was by my side.
