Someone was yelling my name.

I have to open my eyes.

“Nick. Nick. We have to get out.”

Jameson’s voice filled my ears and I forced my lids open in a panic.

I pushed on the door but it was stuck or something.

I looked up to see a woman’s face right outside my window. She was blinking and her gaze was forward. It was then that I realized she was sitting inside a white SUV that was so close it was preventing me from getting my door open. How the hell had we ended up like this?

“I got mine open,” Jen said and as I turned around to look at him, a sharp pain shot through my head.

“Go,” Jameson urged everyone as he grabbed my hand and practically dragged me over the console and out his now opened door.

I glanced over at Austin and Jen standing outside of the SUV. Jen’s face showed the same confusion I felt. Austin seemed focused but also like he was trying to get his bearings. Then I let my gaze drift around to take in the damage. I couldn’t figure out what the fuck had happened.

The SUV was fucked up.

The car I assumed slammed into us from behind was worse, the hood crumpled in on itself and smoke billowing up all around it. As I swung around to take in the rest of the scene, I saw that we’d been pushed into the middle of the intersection. The oncoming car had plowed into the front side of the SUV and we’d somehow ended up side-by-side. I turned my attention to the driver. The blank look I’d seen on her before I got out of the SUV had been wiped away and I could see that now she was visibly shaken.

Without thinking, I headed for her.

I had to make sure she was okay and maybe get her out of her vehicle.

“My baby,” she suddenly screamed like she had just snapped back into the moment.

Pop. Pop. Pop.

“Nick!” Jen screamed at the top of his lungs and he jumped in front of me as anotherpopwent off.

Then he dropped like dead weight to the ground.

“Get down,” someone yelled. Jameson, I thought, but everything was muffled and fuzzy and though I was sure of what was going on in the back of my mind, I couldn’t seem to find the sense to know what to do.

“You were supposed to love me!” The scream came out sounding like a banshee ready to attack. Whoever she was, she had clearly snapped. “He can’t have y—”

Two more shots went off. Quickly.Pop. Pop.One right after the other.

Just the two.

It sounded… different. Controlled. Precise. Whoever fired those hit their intended target.

“Jen,” I said but it came out like a whisper.

I dropped to my knees and saw a red blob of color just under his shoulder. It grew, seeping through his shirt until it looked wet and shiny even in the side glow of the headlights.

With shaking hands, I pressed down on the spot.

“Jameson!” I screamed because I didn’t know what to do. “Jameson! Austin! Somebody help me!”

Not Jen. No.

“I can’t lose you, Jen. You have to be okay. Please don’t leave me. You’re my best friend. Jen? Jen?!”

“Nick, are you okay? Were you hit?” It was Jameson’s voice but it sounded muffled and far away. All I could do was shake my head. I couldn’t take my eyes off of Jen. “Nick?”

“Help him!” I suddenly screamed. “Fucking save him!”
