Which caused him to throw his hands up in surrender.

“You can’t even tell me sexy shouldn’t be there,” he said with a flat look. “Don’t get all jealous, I find my own sexy just fine, thank you.”

I continued to scowl at him.

Apparently, I had a little jealous bone in my body. Just a small one, like pinky-toe-sized. Who knew I feel so possessive over someone that wasn’t even technically even mine?

“Ugh,” Jen said dramatically. Before I even knew what was happening, he scooped up my phone and slapped it into my hand. “Call him. Then let me know what kind of arrangements I need to make.”

Then he walked away in the direction of his room. He was giving me the space to do this alone but wasn’t leaving me completely. Just what I needed because I was sure that once the call was over, I would be even more of a wreck no matter how the conversation went.

“I can do this,” I told myself.

Then I unlocked my phone and hit the call button before I could chicken out.

“Hey,” Jameson said all smooth and sexy as he answered the phone. But under that, I could hear the mix of emotions swirling in that one, simple word.

“Hi,” I squeaked back the complete opposite of his tone.

“Nick? Are you alright?” His voice sounded panicked. Great, now I’d made him think that I was in danger.

“I’m fine. What’s going on?” There, that sounded a little more normal. Right? Oh, fuck, this was not going like I’d hoped. I should have written down what I wanted to say and rehearsed it a few times so I was prepared.

He snorted and it caused me to smile. It was that snort that told me he thought I was being utterly ridiculous. I knew I wasn’t hiding my nervousness from him.

“Not a whole lot. How are things with you?”

“Great. Yeah, pretty awesome.”

“That’s good. I’m glad to hear it.” The softness in his tone told me that he meant those words. However, he could easily tell that I was acting weird and I could hear hesitation in his tone.

“So, um, I have a movie premiere here in LA in a little over two weeks.”

“Congratulations. I’m happy for you,” he replied a little flatly, but I sensed he was happy for me even if there was some disappointment there like this conversation wasn’t going the way he hoped it would.

“See, the thing is, I was wondering if you’d go.”

“You need me on security? Yeah, I’ll work it out with Reed. I told you I’d be there for you always.”

Why wasn’t he getting it?!

I took a slow breath in. If only I could just spit it out.

“Um, no.” My words sounded weak. This was not working. I cleared my throat and called forth all the strength I had inside of me. “I want you to go with me. Be at my side. As mine.”

There was a long moment of silence.

And I mean long.

“Yours, huh?” That was what he had to say. He knew what he was doing and it was a tad bit on the mean side. But I couldn’t hate him because hearing the slight humor in his voice shot a streak of warmth through my heart. “Like your bodyguard? Your drink holder? You people have those right? Or your lint roller guy? Would I get to chase after you and constantly rub you down?”

“That’s Jen’s job,” I blurted out thinking about the lint roller. I was sure it sounded like I meant the rubdown part. “No, wait. No, not like that. Fuck! Would you come with me and let me show the world that I’m in love with you?!”

I pretty much yelled that last part and it was not smooth or sexy at all. Not to mention the fact that I just said I was in love with him.

But, yeah.

I was.
