My head spun as I quickly washed the grime from the mission off.

When I made my way back to the bed, Milo was facing away from me. I thought he was still out, so I slipped into bed as smoothly as I could. The light on his bedside table was on. I reached over to turn it off, but stopped when I noticed the wetness rolling out of his eyes.

“Mi,” I said softly, hand going to his shoulder. His body shook with a sob, but there was no sound that came with it. “Baby, what’s wrong?”

“I don’t know,” he said, breath shaky as he inhaled. “I’m just crying and I don’t understand why.”

“Hey, hey. Come here.” I rolled him until he was facing me, then I pulled him against my chest. His hand wrapped around my waist, and it felt like he was holding on for dear life. So, I promised him, “I’m not going anywhere.”

“I think everything has been a little much, and I’m overwhelmed by all the recent changes in my life,” he said, but it sounded as if he didn’t fully think that was it. “And nothing is settled, so it’s not like I can even get used to them.”

“What can I do to help? Do you want me to go?”

“No,” he said as his hand moved to grip my shoulder like he could keep me in place. Hell, he didn’t even need to do that. He didn’t want me to go, so I wasn’t going anywhere. “No, please. I…” He licked his lips. “It doesn’t make sense, but you’re everywhere here and I don’t… I don’t hate it. I like it. Before you were just this aggravation at work. Then you were in my life. An aggravation here at home. Suddenly, you’re around me all the time. I can’t get away from you. And then…”

“And then what? Tell me.”

“And then… you’re gone, but you’re still here.” He sighed and closed his eyes. “You’re gone, and I didn’t want you gone. I didn’t know what would happen when you came back. Would you come here? Are you ready to move back out? Do you feel stuck? I’m sure you wish you’d never jumped into this thing in the first place, and now it’s like you have to stay. And it’s not like I don’t want you to do your job, but I didn’t like having this essence of you here and not knowing if I’d ever get the real you again.”

I put my finger under his chin and tilted it back until he looked me in the eye.

“You missed me?” I asked, a smile on my face.

“Yeah, okay. I guess that’s what you’d call it.” His lips twisted in a way that I’d never seen before. But it was easy to tell that he was unsure about saying that. Not because it wasn’t true, but because he wasn’t sure how I’d react to it.

“I missed you,” I told him softly.

“You did?” he asked, brows pulling together in the most adorably clueless way.

“Yeah. I really did. And you know why that was?” This was it. I was going to let him know that I felt there was more here between us. I really hoped it went over well.

“No. I don’t understand.”

“Because I like you, Mi. I really fucking like you. I can’t stop thinking about you. And little things like your scent and your eyes drive me crazy in the best way possible.”

“It drove me crazy to sleep in this bed alone. In fact, I couldn’t.”

“Well, I’m here. You can sleep now.”

“I don’t think I want to sleep. I think… I think…”

“Tell me.” I was dying to know.

“I think I need you. Need to be close to you.”

I chuckled before saying, “You’re plastered to my side. I don’t think you can get much closer.”

He rose up on his arm. All humor faded from my thoughts. The way he was looking down at me, pinning me with those intense blue eyes, held me captive.

Then his lips were on mine. The kiss was desperate, but not sloppy. Not frantic. He was kissing me like he’d missed me, but also like he knew how to kiss me.

Fuck!

He could ask me for anything right now, and I’d give it to him.

But I wasn’t sure I had much more to offer other than myself.

And I really fucking hope he wanted me.
