“I should have known better. I’m sorry.” I shook my head, but inside I was smiling. “I’ll use the red one tonight and promise to replace it as soon as I can.”
“You don’t have to. It’s not…”
I knew exactly what he had been about to say. It wouldn’t be staying here.
I hit the button on the controller and the system came to life.
The last thing I wanted to think about was what was next. What would happen once his parents left. How things might shift between us.
So I focused on tonight and getting Milo to have a good time.
We looked through my digital collection since my system was one of the ones without a disk drive. I was constantly trying new things that came out. This was my way to unwind, and I liked playing just about anything.
“How about this?” I asked, stopping on the one I thought he might like. “We work as a team to cook stuff and get it out to the customers.”
“It sounds pretty bad.” He paused. “But I suppose the lawn mower simulator one sounds worse.”
I chuckled.
“Actually, that one’s pretty hilarious. I’ll show you sometime.”
So then we started playing. It did not go smoothly. The kitchen caught fire quite a few times, and when we got to the levels where the rats would come steal the food, he didn’t understand how that was a thing. But he kept wanting to play. And there was this twinkle in his eyes when we finally won a level that made everything worth it.
“What else do you have?” he asked with excitement in his tone after it had gotten to the part where it was just way too hard for us.
He was so adorable that I couldn’t resist leaning over and kissing him. He kissed me back, his hand slipping around my neck and holding me in place. The kiss lasted longer than I’d meant for it to, but I didn’t mind. I liked when Milo dove into things like this.
We spent half the night playing games together. Shoulder-to-shoulder, with our backs resting against the headboard. I got to see him smile. I even heard him softly laugh a few times. There was this light in his eyes that I got a glimpse of every time he turned his head to kiss me.
And all I could think was,I want this life. I want this man.

“I’m going to hit the store and then head home. I told your dad I’d cook for them one last time tonight.”
Remy’s voice hit my ears, and I looked up from the screen.
I hadn’t even been aware that he’d opened my office door and was standing there, hand still on the knob, like he wasn’t sure if he should have entered or not.
“Did you knock?” I asked him, realizing too late that my confusion came off in a bit of an asshole tone.
“Is this one of those moments where you don’t realize you’re being a dick?” he asked with a tiny smirk on his lips.
“Yeah. Sorry.” I loved the way he pointed it out, and how it was like he just knew I wasn’t trying to be a… dick.
I had to admit, hearing that word fall from his lips had my head going in a direction it should not be going while I was at work. He couldn’t just say something like that and expect me not to get stuck on that one word. Especially after the things we’d done together and how his dick had become one of my favorite things recently.
“Mi,” he said in a tone that hit my ears like a snap.
“What?” I asked, wondering if I’d missed something while I was lost in my thoughts.
“You were drifting off there. Care to share what you’ve got going on in that head of yours?” He was smirking even harder now.
I scowled.
“I don’t think it’s appropriate to say at work,” I said flatly.
