“Huh?” Big Paws grunted. “Love?” he scoffed. “There’s no love in this life. Anything you love is just a thing they can take away from you. You’re askin’ the wrong guy.”
“Sure. Right. Okay.” I sighed. “But if you were in love, wouldn’t it be something you’d know? It wouldn’t just come out of nowhere one day and hit you in the face, right?”
His huffed-out breath was full of annoyance.
“Look, I don’t fuckin’ know,” he snapped. “Love ain’t something that can be defined, really. I don’t think so anyway. You got feelings, you got feelings. You think it’s love, it’s probably love. If the reason your fingers started moving on that keyboard is because you was thinkin’ about someone, then I imagine that’s love. That’s what that shit does to you, I guess.”
“Promise me you won’t hurt my… my person.” On the off-chance they had no idea about Remy— who was living in my house right now— I didn’t want to give too much away.
That and, Remy wasmy person. My only person. I couldn’t see the future, but the more I thought about it, the less I liked the idea of him not being in it.

Remy
I have to get him back.
That was the only thing I could think of. I had to. No try. No attempt. Ihadto get Milo back.
He’d been gone for hours now. I couldn’t even imagine how scared he must have been.
I made it up to the office, hardly remembering how I got there. Austin was waiting by the elevator. He met my eyes as I stepped into the main part of the office. They were serious, not a trace of humor at all.
“Kyle is on his way in and Roland’s coming with him. Reed’s headed here too, but it will take him a while.” Of course, because he lived two hours away. “I sent messages to everyone else who’s in town.” His hand went to my shoulder. “Let’s find him.”
I nodded.
That feeling of not knowing what to do lasted a few beats longer. Then I pulled the mask over my face and got my shit together.
“I have to get into his office,” I said. I’d break the door down if I had to. There was something in there that would give me a clue to what had happened to him. I just knew it.
“I have an idea,” Austin said, and then he was moving away. I had no idea where he was headed, but I was going to trust him.
I gripped Milo’s phone tightly in my hand. Then I began flipping it over and over again as I tried to think. Just a swipe of my finger to unlock it. And I knew he was smart enough not to put anything on there that people shouldn’t see. So this thing was basically useless to me here in my hands.
But what if…
I brought the screen to life and swiped my finger across it. There was that same message blinking up at me. He didn’t get to send it.
What if he never gets the chance to send it?I thought, and felt the sting of tears in my eyes.
“No,” I said out loud as I nearly punched the home button with my thumb.
I started with his search history.
Most of it made me chuckle. I was learning more about Milo as I read through it. He was one of those people that immediately needed answers whenever he had a question pop up in his mind. Anything from ‘why is coffee so bitter’ to ‘the best way to cohesively live with someone.’ He’d even looked up things about yeast and how it worked. Which made me smile, but there was nothing that would help me out now.
I didn’t see Milo as someone who took a lot of pictures, but I figured it couldn’t hurt to check out his gallery.
I was right. There wasn’t much there. However, what I did find confused the hell out of me.
“Okay, stand back,” Austin said, causing me to jerk my head up.
With wide eyes, I backed away from Milo’s door.
Austin was holding an ax, and I wanted to be nowhere near that accident waiting to happen.
I opened my mouth to stop him. There had to be another way. Only, I couldn’t think of one, so I just gave him a go-ahead nod and stepped back another few feet.
