Austin caught my eyes as the elevator doors slid shut. He sent me a nod, and that was all that I needed. Just that one thing made me feel less alone. A little less scared.

Minutes later, four SUVs rolled out of the garage in a lethal convoy.

An hour later, a mini army got into position and breached a windowless building in the middle of a neglected area just outside the city.

This was a shoot first, ask questions later type of situation. I wasn’t taking any chances.

It went down rather quickly. I suppose there weren’t really that many places to hide.

I stepped in and fired immediately. The lanky man went down before he could even raise his weapon.

My heart stopped when I laid eyes on Milo. He was sitting at a desk in the middle of the room. His hands were raised above the keyboard, and he looked as if he were frozen in time.

Another shot rang out from behind me.

My head whipped to the side just in time to see another man hit the floor with his knees. His focus turned to Milo, and there was an expression on his face I couldn’t read. The only thing I could tell was that it didn’t seem malicious.

What had happened here?

Another shot rang out. Blood sprayed out from his chest as he fell backward, hitting the ground with a loud thump.

“Wait!” Milo screamed as he flew out of the chair and ran to the man that had just fallen down. I snatched him up before he could get close, my arm wrapping around his waist and pulling him into my body. I turned and held him close. “No. I have to… no.”

I looked over at Cade, who was crouching by the second body. His fingers went to the man’s neck, and a second later, he shook his head.

“He’s gone, baby.” I held him tighter, wondering if we’d fucked up. But as I looked at the scene and noticed the gun in his limp hand, I didn’t think that we had. Still, I felt the need to tell him, “I’m sorry.”

“No.” Milo shook his head. “He kidnapped me. He was one of them. He was going to kill me.”

“Then what was that about?” I asked softly.

“I need his name,” he said. “His grandmother… we have to make sure she’s taken care of.”

I didn’t ask anything more. I trusted Milo. Something must have happened to tug at Milo’s heartstrings, whether he would realize it or not.

“Okay. I’ll make sure it gets taken care of,” I promised him.

Milo’s arms wrapped around my neck, and he practically climbed me. I cradled his ass and held on to him.

We got here in time. I let out the breath I’d been holding since I’d realized he was gone.

“You found me,” he said.

“Yeah. I’ll always find you,” I promised him. “But can you try not to get into any more situations like this, please?”

He pulled his head away from my neck to look into my eyes.

“I will try very hard,” he said, a little smile curling up the corners of his mouth. “I did not like that.”

“There’s blood on your face,” I said, seeing the dry, flaky specks of red dotting his beautiful skin. “Are you okay?” Frantically, I tried to set him down so I could check him out. He just wrapped his arms tighter around my neck and hung on. “Milo?”

“It’s not mine,” he told me. “I’m not wounded.”

“Clear!” Austin called out. Turning my head, I caught him walking into the main part of the building from where there appeared to be rooms in the back.

“I’ll call it in,” Cade said as he rose to stand.

“Wait!” Milo cried out. This time, he was the one trying to break away from the embrace. I let him go, making sure he was steady before I removed my hands. “Don’t call the FBI.”
