I laughed as he pulled me out of the house.
Yeah, I saw that coming.
Milo
“Why would this be a bad idea?” I asked.
The other end of the phone was dead silent, which was surprising considering I was on speaker with Kyle, Reese, Keith, and Theon.
They were all over at Kyle’s place, doing that thing where they distract one another. I would have probably been forced over there if I hadn’t known Remy was on his way back from a mission with Sawyer and the new guy. I should probably learn his name. To be fair, I had been distracted a lot this last month. Between work and this, I’d been preoccupied to the max.
“Well,” Reese said. “It’s not really a normal thing to buy a house behind your partner’s back and then move them into that house while they’re away.”
“But he mentioned moving in together,” I said. “His place is too small for the two of us and mine has stairs. So it only makes sense that we move into some place that works for both of us.”
I looked around the new living room, which I was currently standing in.
There was a brown leather sectional. A huge TV, where his three systems were hooked up to. I wasn’t sure why he had so many, but then again, I did enjoy playing games with him on all of them. A couple of bookshelves that held books, pictures of us, and some other things. The puzzle boxes were on display there, sitting side-by-side. I’d also found a coffee table that matched both the TV stand and bookshelves. The furniture was dark, and I’d chosen a light emerald green for the walls.
“Yes, but typically you would look for a placetogether,” Reese said, stressing that last word. “And agree on a place you liketogether.”
“But, I found this place that fits most of our criteria. It’s close enough to work so that we don’t waste a lot of time driving. It’s one story. Two-car garage. It has a lot of natural light and a huge island, which means a lot of workspace for Remy.” And what it didn’t have, I hired people to fix.
Reese sighed and I could almost see him shaking his head before he said, “I don’t know why I try. We love you just how you are, Milo.”
“Leave him alone,” Kyle said, but it sounded like he was laughing. “He knows what he’s doing.” His voice grew a little louder. “I’m sure Remy will love it.”
“I believe he will,” I said. I might not have been as confident as my words, though.
“I’m sure he will,” Keith said.
“Good luck,” Theon called out. “I mean, not like you need it. I just don’t know what to say here.”
“Let us know how it goes,” Reese said.
“I can do that.” I paused, thinking of when I’d be able to do so. If things went well tonight, Remy and I would probably be naked and busy for most of it. “Tomorrow.”
They laughed and then got off the phone.
I wasn’t sure why they’d called me in the first place. But I suppose it was nice they were checking in with me.
Like real, true friends.
Just one of the things that had shifted over the last year.
Also, my father and mother decided to divorce. He sold the business and the house. He was basically starting from scratch, but he promised me he was happy. He also said Ms. Lindon, who had owned and worked at the ice cream shop in Willow Hill since before I was around, asked him if he’d like to go to dinner. I was pretty sure he’d called me for advice about that situation, but I hadn’t been much help. He was now working at a local grocery store, and seemed a lot less stressed.
My mother? Who knew. Last my father had heard, she found a man that had money. He was significantly older than her, but I suppose that didn’t matter. I had decided that I didn’t care if she was happy or not since she left here and hasn’t since made contact with me. She didn’t even call to check on me after I’d been kidnapped.
Remy told me that I shouldn’t waste time having people in my life that didn’t care about me.
I one hundred percent agreed with him.
My phone vibrated, and I jumped. I’d already set up the security system, so it was alerting me that a car had pulled into the driveway.
My feet seemed to be stuck to the floor. So when Remy came crashing into the front door, I was frozen in the living room, blinking at him.
“Milo?” His body seemed to sag with relief the moment he saw me. I didn’t understand why. Then he rushed over to me and wrapped his arms so tight around me that I was having trouble breathing and my feet left the floor. “I thought you were…”
