Evan’s hand tightened in my grasp as he moved protectively in front of me.

“Hi, I’m—”

“Lawman,” I growled, causing him to snap his mouth closed. It was so easy to tell from his stupid suit and the way he held himself.

“I helped your club find you,” he stated in a way that said he hadn’t done it out of the goodness of his heart. I glanced at LT to confirm what he’d said, and received a firm nod as an answer. “Now I need to ask you some questions.”

“And suppose I tell you that I ain’t got nothing to tell you?” I said, baiting him for sure.

“Then I’d say, I’m sorry for what I put you and Sparrow through, and I’d tell you to have a good night.”

“It was you,” I said with a sneer. My eyes narrowed at him. The regret was clear on his face. Couldn’t say why I felt the need to cut him a break, but I did. Sagging back into the bed because exhaustion was winning at the moment, I said, “Ask your questions.”

“Can you tell me anything about what happened to you?”

I studied him through slitted lids.

“I tripped,” I told him, unable to hold the smirk back.

He sucked in a deep breath through his nose. I could practically hear him counting to ten in his head.

“Look,” he said in a low tone as he took a step closer to me. He glanced around, holding Prez’s eyes for a long moment before swinging his gaze back to me. “I saw the woman that was taken with you.” His face held anger and sadness. My memory was still fuzzy, leaving me to wonder how bad they’d hurt Cat. “I’ve got a mess of a scene and a bunch of burned-up bodies due to a moving van exploding. It’s going to take weeks, maybe even months, to sort out who was there. If some of them happened to make it out of thatsituation, I’d like to track them down. See that they pay for what they’ve done and make sure they never have the chance to do it again. I just need to know who was there and who I might need to keep an eye out for.”

LT cleared his throat and stepped up.

“The man who rented the truck got away,” he said, leaving me to wonder how much I’d missed. Who rented the truck? Who the fuck got away?! “And another one rode off, but I have a feeling he didn’t get far.”

So someone went after him and must have already taken care of it.

“And the rest of them?” the agent asked.

Prez just stared him down, not saying a single word.

The agent huffed out an annoyed breath.

“I want them shut down for good,” the agent said. “I have a list of the current members. If I, say, let you see that list, could you maybe let me know which ones I don’t need to waste my time with anymore?”

Prez stroked his short beard, lips pulled down in a thoughtful frown.

“I might be able to give you anideaof ones that I don’tthinkyou need to be wastin’ your time with.”

“Thank y—”

“But if I do, I expect a favor owed. And when I call to collect, you can’t turn it down, no matter what it is.”

The agent’s jaw bulged and I could practically see the steam coming out of his head. With his teeth clenched tightly, he said, “Fine.”

“Let’s find somewhere else to have this conversation. Wrench needs some rest,” LT said.

They left, Dad sending me a worried look before going too.

I turned to Evan, panic making my heart race.

“Calm down,” he said as the monitor behind me beeped like crazy.

“Who rented the truck?” I asked in a tone that said I wasn’t playing around.

“Cat’s ex,” he said, eyes holding mine.
