“That may be, but he’s got somebody on the inside. That’s the only way he can get close to you.” I blew out a breath, trying tocalm down because he wasn’t listening. “Look, I don’t give a fuck if you live or die.”

“Niko…” Janea called my name in warning.

“No, Janea. I’m sure the Governor would like me to be upfront.” I slid my gaze back to the governor.

He gave a curt nod.

“My concern is Janea. If you don’t believe her, fine. She’s done what she came to do. But my suggestion is that when we leave, you ditch your entire security team. If not, then whatever happens is on you. And once you find out that everything she’s said is true, you’ll owe the Order.”

I stood, and Janea followed.

“Governor, take care of yourself,” Janea said before I grabbed her hand, and pulled her out of his office.

If he didn’t want to listen, then that was on him. Janea had done all she could do. Now he knew his life was in danger. If he chose not to heed her warning, then that was on him. There was nothing more we could do. And if he chose to believe us, he’d owe the Order, and I would definitely cash in.

Chapter Nineteen

Janea

Theamountofstressriding my shoulders is ridiculous. “I don’t think our meeting with the Governor went as good as it should have gone. This man has known me my entire life. Why the hell would I lie to him about something like that?”

“There’s nothing you can do, Janea,” Eros said, grabbing my foot, then kissing my toes before massaging it.

We were back at the clubhouse, but I was so ready to get out of here. The walls were closing in around me, but now wasn’t the time to complain about my living situation. I had bigger problems to deal with.

I groaned, closing my eyes, loving the feel of his fingers digging into my tired foot. “If you want to quit your day job, you’d make an excellent massage therapist.”

He chuckled but didn’t comment.

I sighed. “I just want all this to be over, Niko.”

When I gazed into his eyes, my entire world stopped. While I was very attracted to Eros, what I felt went way beyond attraction. He was digging his way into my heart.

“I know you do. I’m working on it. But as for the governor, let it go. There’s nothing more you can do. It’s on him now that he has the information.”

He moved his hands up my ankle toward my calf. I was in heaven. I know this hadn’t just been hectic for me but for him, too. His life was now centered around protecting me. He and Ambrose can’t even go home because my situation may have put them in danger.

“Have I told you thank you?”

I had a lot to thank him for, but I’d been so caught up in everything, I’d thought of nothing else.

“You don’t have to thank me, Janea. I care about you.” He kissed my foot, then put it down, and picked up the other one. He kissed my toes then started to massage that foot. “And if I can do anything to make all this shit go away, that’s what I’m going to do.”

Relief instantly washed over me because of his words. He felt the same way as me. This went beyond simple sexual attraction. He cared about me, just as much as I cared about him and Ambrose.

“How dangerous are you?”

His lips traveled up my calf, then continued higher to my thigh. “You ever heard the saying, don’t ask questions you already know the answers to?” He nipped at my thigh, causing me to hiss. “Ask me what you want to know.”

“Have you killed anyone?”

“I have.”

He answered the question with no hesitation. It took me off guard.

“I don’t play games, Janea. I do what I have to do to survive in this world. I always have, and I always will.”

“How many?” I asked.
