She thrust her sword up into the air. “To the fae border.”
A black void swallowed us up in an instant and swept us away. A weightless feeling rocked and swayed inside my gut like I was riding a broken elevator. I had the sensation of swift movement, of Belle's bony elbow against my palm, but I couldn't see shit. Oh, this was not fun. My stomach rose much too close to my throat, but then we jerked to a stop.
The void spit us out behind a line of thick trees stretching as far as the eye could see. A shimmery wall of magic warped everything beyond the trees, and inside the wall, little pocket-sized dragons flew, like they were the ones maintaining the magic. The grass under our feet was whisper soft and glittering with dew under the bright sunshine at our backs.
Undermyfeet, I mean. Belle slipped as soon as we landed and bounced on her ass.
"Motherfucker," she hissed, rubbing her hip while she splayed her legs out in the grass. "Why am I the only one who can't land right after bird-sword transit?"
“If it makes you feel any better...” Nausea rolled in my stomach, and I posted my hands on my knees, taking in giant gulps of air. “I’m pretty sure I’m going to throw up.”
“Take your time.” She shoved to her feet, just a blur of movement that I had to look away from because it made me dizzier.
I shook my head to clear it and willed my stomach to stay put. After one more deep breath, I stood up tall. “Ready?”
She nodded. “Let’s go start a war—er, continue a war that’s already been started. Whatever we’re doing, let’s go kick some faeass.”
Despite not liking hardly anyone, this woman was starting to grow on me.
“Should you have left that at home?” she asked, pointing to the crown on my head. “What if it gets damaged?”
“It’s fine. The fae need to know that they’re dealing with a queen.” I gave her a shaky grin, and together, we stepped through the wall and across the border into the fae land.
