As my focus returned to the hall, Allie exited one door and entered another. I power walked down to see she was in the ladies room. I opened a door next to the bathroom to see a Sunday school classroom filled with little tables and a window. Bingo.

I closed the door behind me and entered. Once the screen was out, I hopped through the window and into the snow before examining the other window in front of me; it was a good window that slid up. Old and workable.

I pushed with all my might and got it opened about ten inches.

“Allie.” I whispered. “Langley?”

I jumped when she appeared in front of the window.

“Go away, Levi.”

“I need to tell you something.”

“Well, I need to tell you that Levi and evil are spelled with the same letters. Yeah, how did I miss that shit? While I may have had dumbass stamped across my forehead in glitter recently, I’m well aware of the reality, and it’s time for you to go straight to hell.”

“Well, that’s just plain mean.”

She flashed a toothy smile. “I know. Bye.”

She started to turn when I reached in and caught her wrist.

“No.”

“No? You’re not the boss of me, Levi Dawson.” Her eyes went wide. “I hate you.”

“Langley, tell me what’s changed here? I mean last night?—”

“Last night sucked.” She pulled her wrist, but I didn’t let go.

“You’re not marrying Clint.”

“I don’t give a tiny little rat’s ass what you think. Clint is a good man. Good for me.”

“So is pickled Herring.”

Her nose wrinkled. “What?”

“Yeah.” Where was I going with this? “It’s rich in omega-3 fatty acids and Vitamin D.”

“Huh?”

“Some things seem good for you but are fucking garbage.”

She pulled her wrist again, but I held on.

“You just shut your face. Maybe I want to be with him.”

“You’re lying.”

She gasped. “Me? Me lying? You are the biggest liar in the history of the world. You have dark motives and think you can use your stupid smile to get under my skin.”

“You’re adorable when you’re pissed.”

“Just leave me alone.”

I pulled her closer. “You can’t close your eyes without seeing me.”

“That’s it! I’m telling Will and he will kill you today.”
