Clint slurred and pulled himself up by the chair. “I’m fine.”

I shrugged. “Some guys just can’t hold the whiskey,” I whispered. “He might have a problem."

Allie huffed. “He doesn’t have a problem. Except for you, you’re the problem. He’s solid.”

Evan came over and we got him to his feet.

“Evan, does this look like a fella who’s solid?”

“I’m solid.” Clint slurred and narrowed his eyes at me. “But I fuckin’ hate you.”

I nodded. “Ya know Clint, you can fuck straight to fuck off mountain while riding your fuck off horse to the land of Fucktardia for all I care.”

Allie let out a huff. “Real mature.”

Evan chuckled. “I’ll help you get him upstairs.”

“No, I’ve got him.” Allie came around and Clint put his arm over her shoulder.

Allie led him through the living room as Lexi and Rachel gasped.

I followed Clint and Allie. “Nothing like a lush. Right ladies?”

Clint turned, let go of Allie, and pushed my chest. “Fucking shut up, man.”

“I’m not saying anything we all can’t see.”

Allie stepped between us. “Everybody, just go, okay? I’ll help Clint upstairs.”

The room cleared, and I reluctantly followed Lexi toward the kitchen. As everyone walked inside, I hung by the door wondering what Allie was saying to Clint. He was bent down and my pulse ticked up as his mouth was only inches from hers in what appeared to be a heated conversation.

He grabbed her hand, but Allie turned and walked toward the stairs. What was happening?

What wasn’t happening was me staying in the kitchen. Because a second later Clint reached out and grabbed Allie by the upper arm and yanked her to his face. I don’t remember flying out of the kitchen, but before I could lasso my brain, I had grabbed Clint by the shirt and shoved him into the wall. By that time Lexi and Rachel had torn into the room.

“Don’t you ever grab her like that again!” I pulled him to my face. “Do you fucking hear me?”

He pushed me back. “You’re just some ex-boyfriend trying to stir shit up!”

I let out a laugh. “Ex-boyfriend? Try husband.”

Clint was stunned as he looked at Allie who let out a groan.

Lexi jumped forward. “That was a long time ago. A mistake.”

Allie held her hands out. “Everybody, shut up!” She grabbed Clint by the hand. “Please, just go away.”

THE UNRAVELING?

We made our way to Clint’s room in silence. Yes, I’d never mentioned I’d been married, and yes it was clearly a bad decision. When it comes to terrible life choices, I’m pretty sure if I make one more I’ll own the whole set.

We reached the door.

“I knew about the accident, but you left out the part about you and Levi being married?”
