“No, just annoying.”

He took my face in his hand and leaned close to me, head cocked slightly as he stared into my eyes. Was he going to kiss me? I gripped his fingers and tried to pull them off my skin.

“I’m married!” I warned.

He raised a brow. “Did I say that you weren’t? He wishes to meet with me. Do you think that he’s one of those rare humans who doesn’t want immortality and power?”

I swallowed hard. “Don’t you dare turn him.”

“Don’t I dare? You are so precious, so foolish, sodelightfully full of her own importance. How dare you speak to the Grand Master in demands?” He squeezed my cheeks like I was a child and dropped his fingers. They were terrifying, clawed, very scary, but I wasn’t as scared as I should be.

He was right. He was a terrifying monster, so I should be quaking in my boots instead of wanting to defy him. “Please don’t turn him. I would be very miserable without him.”

“Would you? I thought you were always trying to leave him.”

“Yes, but it would be okay for me to be miserable if I knew that he was happy.”

“You think he wouldn’t be happy as a vampire?”

“Not to be rude, but you lot don’t seem to do a lot of tap dancing, or smiling, or anything really other than snarling and trying to eat me.”

“If you weren’t food, you would have a different opinion of us.”

I shook my head. How could I respond to that? “Sure. Please, don’t turn my husband. He’s going through a rough patch right now, but vampirism isn’t the answer.” Why did I have to say that? It was so painfully obvious.

“Why is it so obvious?” he asked, curious.

“What?”

“Why is it so—”

“I didn’t say that out loud.”

He tapped my forehead. “You don’t have to. We’re very close right now, my blood burning your flesh, my blood sunk into you from the antidote, and of course, your blood from your wound in my mouth, my fangs in your neck while we danced…” His voice got lower, more melodious and soothing until I was completely relaxed. He brushed my hair with his fingers and skimmed my cheek with his lips.

The limo door opened and a small hand gripped my wrist, yanking me away from the monster.

“Don’t you dare touch her!” Wat screamed, eyes bright and almost glowing while he faced off against the Grand Master.

. . .

I pickedhim up and ran for the house. Thank goodness for the extra strength, because Wat was heavier than I remembered. He struggled for a second then wrapped his legs and arms around me and held me so tight that I could barely breathe. Not that I was breathing as long as the Grand Master felt challenged by my baby.

We made it to the house without the Grand Master ripping both of us apart. Once we made it inside, I leaned against the front door, heart pounding, just holding the lanky twelve-year-old that I hadn’t hugged goodbye. I kissed his hair a hundred times while his racing heart pounded against mine.

“Hey, Wat. Did you really run away from the boarding school just so you could come home?”

He pulled away and sniffed then dropped to the floor. “We can go out the back. I have train tickets to take us to Chicago, and from there we can get a flight somewhere else. Australia has the coolest animals.”

“What? Wat, you want to go on vacation? School must be pretty hard, but I can’t really go on vacation right now. I have a new job.”

“As the Grand Master’s exterminator?” he spat, eyes coming to life, so intense, it really did seem like they were glowing.

“What do you know about—”

“He’s not what you think he is.”
