“Well, I’m thinking, how about we make a nice meal for when Raven gets back? It will be a nice surprise for her. What do you think, pumpkin?”
“Oo, Wiyam, I love the idea!” She said with her eyes wide with excitement. “We make cake, too?”
“Definitely make cake, Raven loves cake. But I’ll make cake...”
Can’t have her hands in the food. I felt guilty at the thought, staring at the bundle of cuteness.
“Waven loves Wiyam, too,” she added, and I gave her a small smile, ruffling her hair.
“And she loves Azura, too.”
She nodded, and I gave her a tight hug. She was an observant child, and I knew that as she got older, she’d begin to notice how some people treated her, their glances and their whispered remarks. I was going to protect her the best I could.
“Wiyam, do you miss Waven?” She asked, concerned as she stared up at me.
“I do, but can’t I hug my little sister otherwise?” I questioned.
“You can. Okay, Wiyam, you cook, I go watch TV, then you give me the leftover cweam.”
I watched her rush off before I got to work in the kitchen. She sure could be such a good girl.
I had justput the roast chicken in the oven and was stirring the custard when I realised Azura was no longer in front of the TV. Shit, I didn’t even realise when she left!
I could hear her steady heartbeat and rushed to check up on her, pushing open our bedroom door to see her sitting on Raven’s stool in front of the make-up table with several of her make-up palettes and lipsticks open.
“Look, Wiyam, I bootiful.” I looked at her.
Wow, she sure turned into a Halloween horror pumpkin overnight…
Garish purple lipstick was smeared over her lips and all around them, her cheeks were a horrendous pink, and her eyes looked as if someone had punched her a few times, and, to make it worse, the liquid liner was spread all over her lids and around her eyes. Goddess…
“You were far more beautiful before, baby girl,” I commented quickly, going over to her. Shit, would Raven get mad? She had totally wrecked half these powdery eyeshadows.
“No, I look nice now,” she pouted at her reflection.
Did she really think she looked good? Shit, I needed to get this all cleaned up before Raven got back…
“Okay, look, let’s get you washed up-”
“No, no, Wiyam! I keep it on! I show Waven I love her make-up.”
“No, if Raven sees you like that, she might scream at how scary you look,” I said, grabbing the wipes Raven used before showering.
Wrong fucking sentence.
Her large eyes pooled with tears, getting wider and wider by the second. Her lips quivered, and I closed my eyes just as she broke into sobs.
“Wiyam say I scawy, I no scawy! I want Mama!”
Tears. An entire fucking waterfall of them.
Damn.
I remembered the last time I triggered her off when Raven had first returned home.
“No, pumpkin, come on, no crying. You look beautiful. If you want to wear make-up, you wear make-up, okay?”
“Mama!”
