“What do you know about Emjay?” I demanded.

“That you killed her in cold blood,” he said between gasps. “Because that’s what Faid do.”

“Right. And you know this because you were there? She’s the one who tried to kill me.”

“A likely story from someone who keeps choosing violence and murder. Will Nera see it that way when she finds out the truth?”

“Answer my question,” I fired back, low and deadly. “What do you know about Emjay?”

“You’re in no position to make demands.” With a burst of speed, Mike lunged for the stun gun on the ground, his finger instantly finding the trigger.

With me towering over him, I took up too much space as an easy target. The crackle of the gun electrified the air.

I ducked under his raised arm, narrowly avoiding the bursting charge, and delivered a powerful kick to Mike’s midsection.

He grunted, momentarily stunned. I seized the opportunity and flew toward the door, my long strides eating up the distance. I’d tell Nera myself, just as soon as I got back to her.

But Mike recovered quickly and shot to his feet, unleashing a barrage of electric shocks from his stun gun.

He narrowly missed.

As I unlocked the door, Mike closed in, the stun gun crackling dangerously close to my back. Before I threw the door open, I kicked backward and connected sideways with Mike’s knee. He cried out and stumbled away.

Determination to escape surged through my veins. I opened the door, and with a burst of speed, I flung myself out of the room.

The hallway had cleared. Freedom was close. I remembered the way in. Getting out would be a cinch.

But I wasn’t yet finished with Mike.

He rushed for me from inside the room, and I quickly slammed the door on him. One jerk of the doorknob, and it cracked into pieces, all of which I kicked under the door to wedge it shut.

Now Mike was trapped. Too bad it wasn’t permanently.

I sprinted down the hall and swung a right, only to find it wasn’t empty.

I’d seen her once before, through the slats of the honeymoon bungalow’s closet while she spoke with Nera about the Faid-finding weapon. Tight blonde bun, couldn’t keep her blue eyes from undressing Nera, and a little bit of drool on her chin.

Lieutenant Avery.

Her eyes widened when she saw me, and then even more when the sound of crashing metal exploded from the direction I’d just come from.

I jolted to a stop, thinking fast. “Excuse me, Lieutenant. I’m King Maxx, here for official business with Earth Space Fleet. If you’ll just step aside, I’ll be on my way.”

Instead, she slid her gaze behind my back, telling me all I needed to know.

I was screwed.

Mike’s stun gun connected with my side, sending a jolt of electricity through my body. My muscles seized, and I crumpled to the ground, immobilized.

Mike approached with a cocked eyebrow, the only hint that he was relishing his victory. “Hurts, doesn’t it? To know that humans are smarter, better, and faster than you? We win. Always.”

I forced myself to move, to escape back to Nera’s arms, struggling to regain control of my body. But it was no use.

My mouth still worked though as well as my tongue, and I summoned all my strength to say something I shouldn’t. “Did you put as much effort into being a father as you put into being an asshole?”

He slammed the butt of the gun down into my face, and then all I saw was black.
