I shot up from my chair, immediately sensing something was very wrong.“Is it Nera?”
“King Maxx, there’s…” He heaved a long breath as though he’d been holding it for several minutes.“It’s your daughter.”
Chapter four
Nera
Ittookusthreedays to get to planet Xenoxx, three long days that I nursed my broken heart with too much ice cream.
Did I say too much?I meant not enough.
Before, and during, that time, I’d learned several things which I voice-to-texted in my journal I hardly ever used just to make sense of it all:
Forcing a Faid named Rain onto my ship by gunpoint was easier than I thought it would be.
Getting my ex’s trackers out of my head was also easier than I thought it would be.Doc let me up and around within the hour.I threw them out the airlock just after screaming a few choice words into them for the benefit of my ex.Four letter words like ship and crew and duck.I mean duck.Stupid auto cucumber!
I was a beast at Ping-Pong, though not as much as Major. My furry boy could whoop me with several of his toe beans tied behind his back.
I was officially up the duff.Cooking a bun in the oven.Knocked up.Pregnant with a Faid’s child.Confirmed by not one, but two, professionals with medical training, namely Rain and Doc.No one else knew that little secret.
So, how did I feel about that last one?I didn’t.I played Ping-Pong with my cat instead of any thinking or feeling, as any normal person would, obviously.
“Captain,” Darc said over theOdessa’sintercom.“The Xenoxx have granted us permission to land at the royal castle. We’ll be touching down in approximately two minutes.Oh, and one of our prisoners, the purple one, has asked Mosely if he gets to go with you.”
Yes, I decided on my way to the bridge.Axxel could come with me as a show of good faith that I wouldn’t and haven’t killed any Xenoxx.Yet.
Word was still out if I would kill their king or not.Did my baby daddy deserve to live even though he’d lied to me and brutally broke my heart?Decisions, decisions.
I burst onto my ship’s bridge, my curiosity brimming over at what the planet Xenoxx looked like.I’d never even seen pictures.
“Whoa, Captain,” Philip breathed, “check it out.”
Check it, I did.Through the viewscreen, every purple hue imaginable streaked the sunset sky, with wispy ribbons of gilded clouds glowing across the planet below.Sprawling gardens adorned with vibrant, otherworldly flora emitted a soft, iridescent sheen.
“I’ll just go and get our Xenoxx prisoner,” I muttered without moving, caught in a trance I wasn’t so sure I wanted to escape from.
“Uh-huh,” Darc whispered, sounding just as caught up in the view as I was.
She touched us down oh-so-gently in front of a magnificent castle, which was a fusion of organic and tech seamlessly integrated into its design. Its towering spires reached towards the clouds, displaying intricate patterns etched with luminous materials that shimmered and changed colors, reflecting the purple alien sky in mesmerizing ways.
“I’ll just go and get our…” I had to force my gaze away from the viewscreen.“Oh, I already said that, didn’t I?”
