Huh.A date… Fuck, I hadn’t been on a date in a long time. And why the hell was I taking dating advice from my old man?

“You’d been outta the game for a while there, pops.” I teased, making my way over to the tool boxes.

“I kept Payton around, didn’t I?”

I flicked a pointer up at the sky as he booted up the combine and drove out of the barn.

As I sat at the table, placing tools in their designated areas, I pondered the date idea a little more.

Bambi and I had been out so many times on little hangouts, but I wouldn’t call them dates. We were friends at the time, and I guess we still kind of are?Fuck, this is why I can’t be bothered with the relationship shit.

Friends can sleep together… Nah, fuck that, I ain’t bein’ her friend and I sure as shit wouldn’t be watching herfriendlinesswith another guy.

I slid out my phone and crafted a text, sending it to Bambi immediately:

2:09pm – Hunter: Be ready by seven. I’m picking you up.

A half an hour went by before I received a message back, and I smirked at her response:

2:40pm – Bambi: Okay, Mr. Bossy. Want anything else?

The thought of her perfect tits, her perfect body and pleasuring her was enough to give me a semi at the fucking work table. But tonight wasn’t about sex, no. Tonight I’d show Bambi what I should’ve showed her since the second I met her.

The real Hunter Lane.

Chapter Thirty-Eight

Marley

“Why are you staring at me like that?”

I knew why. I knew exactly why Payton and Cramer huddled around me in the staff office as I scooped a spoonful of blueberry yogurt into my mouth.

“Quite the show back there.” Cramer let out.

My cheeks heated as I bit down on the cold silverware, glancing at Payton who remained still with arms crossed.

“I changed my mind?” I squeaked, throwing an innocent smile her way.

Again, she did nothing but glare at me, her blue eyes intense and intimidating.

“Aren’t you glad I’m staying?”

“I am,” she muttered. “But I wan’ know why.”

She wanted the truth. Because I told her why I was leaving, which wasn’t a lie. I did want to see my baby niece and that was fact. Watching her grow up would make me the happiest girl ever, but after what happened with Hunter… I couldn’t bring myself to going through with it. Whether it was the right or wrong choice, it was the decision I was sticking with… at least for now.

“Don’t make me say it, Payton.” I fiddled with my fingers, bobbing my knee up and down.

“Say it.” She imposed.

Ugh.“Okay! Okay, Hunter apologized. He came over and he apologized last night and I know I told you that I was leaving on my own accord but I really care for him and –”

“I’m just teasin’.” Her face softened as she tapped the wooden desk and made her way for the door. “You watch your heart though, deary. He ain’t easy to manage.”

And she was off, leaving me alone with Cramer’s unreadable aura. He tapped his chin, sucking in a breath as if he was about to speak but then quickly closed his mouth.

“Are you going to scold me?” I teased, but not really. I couldn’t get a lock on his emotions, what he was feeling.
