Scratch that.
It freaking drowned.
Blue and red. Blue and red.
Police cars, police officers, they were everywhere.
They surrounded a truck lodged in between the trees, completely flipped on its head. A black truck. His truck –
Hunter’struck.
“No! No!”
I don’t even think Dex stopped driving when I jumped out of the passenger door. My legs were carrying me, but they felt severed from my body. Like somehow I was floating and time stopped and everything was spinning and I was… I was out of control.
My heart ached as I ran passed the caution tape, barreling towards Hunter’s truck seeing no sign of him.
Smoke, smoke was everywhere. Broken glass scattered the terrain.
Hunter.Where’s my Hunter!
Strong arms wrapped themselves around my waist, dragging me away from the scene. Whose arms? Fuck if I knew. Fuck if I cared. They weren’t Hunter’s. They weren’t Hunter’s.
I came face to face with a cop dressed in a black and beige ensemble, mouthing words in my direction but they weren’t meant for me. How could they be? How could he be talking to me when he should be finding Hunter?
“This is bullshit! Go look for him!” I completely lost it, ignoring everything vocal that came out of his mouth.
Dex’s hand was wrapped around my forearm, gripping me backwards as he lowered his mouth to my ear.
“Marley, d’you hear what the deputy said?” His voice shook, but he wore a brave face. How could he wear a brave face. His son was missing!
“Let me go, Dex.” I ordered, inching away from him but he yanked me back.
“Damnit, Marley, Hunter’s at the hospital! He got into an accident.”
Accident.
Hunter got into an accident.
I laughed. I laughed in disbelief. “No he didn’t.”
Ha-ha.Tears sprung to my eyes.Why am I crying? I shouldn’t be crying. He’s fine. He’s okay.
“Let’s…” my mouth was dry. So very dry. “Let’s go see him. Let’s go Dex. Keys, Dex. Come on.”
I started for the truck, forcing my eyes away from the smoke emanating from Hunter’s truck. Hunter’s truck that was flipped, squashed between trees and giant stones, laid out like a corpse on the cold snow.
“Marley.”
The way he said my name halted my movements. Pain. So much pain. Anger. Guilt.
Pain.
Pain.
Pain.
When I finally had the courage to look into Dex’s dark blue eyes, they were covered by a blanket of gloss. Evident tears stamped his cheek as he sucked in a jagged breath.
