“Over here!” Said a muffled voice from outside.

She wasn’t moving.

She wasn’t moving.

It was cold, but there were no breaths.

Why weren’t there any breaths?

Is she… I didn’t have the strength to say it out loud.

I would never say those words out loud.

They weren’t true.

They weren’t true.

A strong light winded me as I craned my neck away from the beam, tuning to the sounds of frantic chatter and movement outside my truck.

Help her.

Save her.

Save my mom.

Shut up, Hunter. Why would she need saving? She’s alive.

She’s alive.

She’s ali…

The passenger door flew open and two men grabbed hold of my mom, pulling her into their arms.

That’s when I saw it.

The shard of glass lodged in her chest.

Speckles of it tainting her skin.

Blood.

So much blood.

And my mom… her face, her beautiful face…

White as stone.

My hands frantically searched for a piece of glass, a piece of anything sharp to slit my throat with.

I needed to die, I needed to die, I couldn’t – I couldn’t be here, not with her.

I killed her.

I KILLED MY MOM!

Strong arms gripped the back of my neck but I fought it, I fought it with every ounce of energy I had left.

“She’s not dead!” I combatted, flailing my free arm at the officer. “She’s not fuckin’ dead! You fix her! You fix her, you hear me!”
