The sunlight danced over my face as I made my way back to the farmhouse, scanning the transparent icicles that hung from the gutter.

Water droplets slid down the sharp picks as the sun penetrated their hard shells, melting away the form of what they once were, and turning them into something new.

I feel that, icicle.

I fucking feel that.

Chapter Twenty-Five

Marley

“Ithink you should wear the blue dress, Mar.”

Winter and I were getting ready at my place since it was a closer Uber and I couldn’t decide on an outfit for the life of me.

After talking to Cramer about Hunter’s behaviour, he decided to let it go and agreed to come with us to Cid’s.

Actually, Winter was thrilled when I suggested it since she was trying to get out of a bummy New Year’s Eve party her friend had invited her to.

I stood in front of my full length mirror, pulling down one of the flashy pink dresses Winter brought over from her place.

Her style was definitely out there; wild, patterned, and borderline manic. But I loved it. It matched her flamboyant personality and everything looked good on her.

Me on the other hand, well… I looked like a parrot had thrown up on a feather scarf and dumped it all over my body.

“Okay, can you toss me the blue dress, please?”

She sifted through a pile of clothing spread out on my bed and finally pulled out the cyan blue fabric, handing it over.

“So…” Winter chimed, thumbing through her phone as I got changed. “Think he’ll kiss you tonight?”

I kicked out of the parade dress and stepped into the new. “Who?”

“Who else, love? Hunter.”

I coughed out a laugh, pulling the thin straps over my freshly tanned shoulders. “Hard no, and I do NOT want him to.”

First lie of the evening, last lie of the year. It’s not that I didn’t want him to, it was the fact that I DID and I couldn’t let myself fall into that fantasy.

Just a few days ago, I’d been so unsure about him, about us. We’d been harbouring resentment for so long, despite being wrong about each other, it was odd to just jump into… well, whatever the hell this was.Nothing. Marley. Nothing. This is nothing.

“So you mean to tell me that if Hunter leaned in to kiss you, you’d pull away?” Winter stared at me intently, waiting for another lie.

I crunched my bottom lip, figuring out the possibility of such an event occurring and no outcome registered so, why would I even waste my time thinking about it?

“We just started over, Winter. There’s no way that’s going to happen.”

Her finger twirled in the air. “But if he did…”

“Then, fuck, I don’t know! I’ll kiss him back? Maybe?” My face reddened as I zipped up the back of my dress, turning to my reflection.

“How do I look?” I asked, blinking back at the girl in the mirror.

Winter stood up, throwing a hand over her mouth as she looked me up and down. “Marley! Stop it, you look absolutely phenomenal. Turn around, turn around, babe!”

I did as I was told, laughing as she spun me in a circle and flattened out the bottom creases of my dress.

“You’re glowing, love, just radiant. This is the one, this is what you’re wearing.”
