“Oh yeah?” Hunter licked the bottom of his lip. “And what did Cookie order?”

Before I could respond, the redhead returned with a tray of shots and some limes, laying them all in a straight line, ready for the taking.

“Goddamn party, ain’t it, Hunt?” Josh chimed, passing out the tequila.

“I ordered those for us three…” Cramer butt in softly.

But Josh slapped him on the back and downed a shot. “Easy fix, man.”

He called over a server wearing a bow tie with a name tag and shouted over the music, “I want six tequila shots, this booth, three minutes!”

Winter and I exchanged a look before taking one of our own, clinking the glasses together and downing the clear liquid.

I wiped the residue off my lip before handing one of my shots to Hunter.

“No trainin’ wheels?” He asked, pulling the small plate of limes over to me.

But I pushed them back, urging him to take the shot. “Training wheels are for pussies.”

A crisp, tender laugh emanated from his throat as he held his stomach, shaking his head.

“Say it again, darlin’. Please, just say that again.”

I couldn’t help my own chuckle and repeated my words. “Training wheels are for pussies?”

He flung his head back, barely missing the hard wooden headboard of the booth and drained the shot, flinging a muscular arm around my shoulders.

“Not bad for a New York City brat, Bambi. Not fuckin’ bad.”

???

As midnight approached, I could barely stand without the assistance of another human being. Winter and I decided to brave the dance floor, swaying our hips in a crowd of drunken people.

My mind raced, my skin dripping with sweat as I laced my fingers around Winter’s arm and followed her back to our booth.

I found Hunter laughing beside Josh, actually sharing a drink with Cramer as I snuggled in next to him.Totally blaming this affection on being drunk.

“Any more drinks?” I slurred, grinning like the freaking Cheshire cat when Alice dropped down the rabbit hole.

“Yep,” Hunter let out, pushing a cup of clear liquid to my hand.

I took a massive swig, frowning when I realized it was water. “You’re no fun.”

“Hear that Josh?” Hunter shouldered his best friend. “I’m no fun.”

Josh put a hand over his heart, throwing me a wounded expression. “How dare ya, love bug? He’s got a brittle heart.”

“Or no heart at all,” I teased, rolling my eyes.

He placed a strong hand over mine, forcing me to face him. “Now, you don’t really believe that, do you Bambi?”

The longer I focused on his features, those pretty, pretty features, I felt the buzz being drawn out of me, orbiting around my head but no longer overpowering my thoughts.

“I don’t.”

He kept me in his hold for a little longer before a crowd of people began calling out the New Year’s Eve countdown.

“Ten!”
