“Hello Adam.”

My father, Mike Matthews was as shiny as a polished shoe. To say he got a rise out of me was an understatement. He practically threw me into finance without my say, and took me under his wing against my will.

“Dad.” I responded, flatly.

“The chicken should be ready in just a few minutes, dear.” My mother said, placing her hand over his.

I scoffed in disbelief, adjusting my tie to keep me from losing my temper. “I don’t eat meat, Mom, I told you this.”

“I beg your pardon?” She questioned.

“When did you decide this?” My dad added, baffled.

“Since Michelle and I got together two years ago?”

It always amazed me when they did this. It was as if everything that didn’t directly concern them was a waste of memory, and they’d continue to do it and blame the fact that it was never brought to their attention. Heaven forbid they had any fault.

My dad’s features soured as he took another sip of wine. “If she wasn’t carrying our grandchild, I’d call her a menace. Who converts their husband to vegetarianism?”

“Ourgrandchild? You meanmydaughter? Does it always have to be you before everyone else?”

His knuckles whitened as he eyed me with distaste, but I interrupted him before he could erupt.

“Don’t bother with a plate, I’m not staying for dinner.” I pushed out of my seat and dressed myself once again. “My reason for coming has to do with Marley entirely.”

My mother looked to my father with disgust, sharpening her grin as she jeered. “What of her?”

I turned to my dad who shared a similar expression. “Are you not going to say anything?”

“I’m withholding my comments.” He steamed, crossing his suited arms over his chest.

Enough of this.“You had no right to tip off Todd Sherman. You know he has a broken nose because of the stunt you pulled?”

My dad cracked a smile, amused at the thought of a defenceless person being attacked. “That must have been the most pivotal moment of that man’s life.”

“Your daughter dated him.”

“And she was not bright in doing so.” He snapped.

Rage boiled within my veins as I analyzed the two robots sitting before me, surrounded by gold with iron hearts.

“Call off the P.I. now. It’s wrong and you have no right to be doing this to her.”

My mother stood up, baring her teeth. “I gave birth to her, she’d have no life if it weren’t for me and I will do as I please.”

I took a step back, realizing how corrupt and inhumane my parents turned out to be and made my way for the front door.

“Then I’ll do as I please, Mom.”

Pulling out my phone, I rang Killian Gladstone, Michelle’s brother who worked as an officer for the NYPD and put in a report.

“Adam?” He answered, surprised. “I don’t have a lot of time but –”

“It won’t take long. I need you to look into a private investigator hired by Harlow and Mike Matthews.”

“Your… parents?” He asked, seemingly confused.

“Hang up the phone, right now, Adam!” My mother stormed, attempting to swat it out of my hands.
