“Payton,”it smells so good.“Thank you for the offer, but it’s too much. I’ve been at your home for under an hour and already drove your son away and inconvenienced your husband beyond belief.”
Her cheeks flushed. “Oh, Hunter’s not my –” But she stopped herself and nodded quickly. “Right well, eat. No discussion. Like I said, car will be fixed in the mornin’ and I’ll get some hot towels for you.”
Before I could protest any further, she sped out of the kitchen and turned the corner, leaving me alone with the acceptance that I was staying here whether I liked it or not.
Holy crap. How did this become my life?
Chapter Four
Hunter
Probably shouldn’t have gotten on the road but to hell with it. I had a couple solid hours to control my buzz so I knew I was able.
My mind wandered the entire drive to Cid’s Pub, thinking about that girl that showed up on our property. I don’t know why the fuck my dad ordered me out when all I was trying to do was get the answers they sure as shit weren’t going to get.
Why they wanted to help that chick out was beyond me. Honestly, not even sure my dad wanted to but Payton on the other hand. God, that woman loved to play house. Trying to build this perfect family, pick up all the pieces that broke the second my mom met the grave.
Tears burned in my waterline but I wouldn’t let them fall. I needed to be as far away from the house as possible, away from any distressing situations or dramatics.
And yet, the smallest part of me wondered what her story was. I saw what she was wearing and she didn’t look like any of the girls ‘round here. She had that polished look about her; blue cardigan, pearls, gold earrings and shit. Someone who thought she’d be better than the rest of us; someone who thought a random family would solve all her problems. Yeah, that’s exactly what she expected and Payton was out here gifting her that on a silver platter. Not me, can’t be bothered.
I pulled into Cid’s and parked my truck next to an old Buick, locked it and headed inside with one single mission.
And there she was. All 5’7 of her; still sexy, still serving and still fuming.
Britt noticed me standing at the bar and rolled her eyes, cashing out a customer before making her way towards me.
“What are you doin’ back here, Hunter?” She snarled, though her tone was less witchy, more bitchy.
Makes for a better challenge. “I wanted to apologize for earlier, sweetheart.”
She crossed her arms, pushing her tits up a little more and clicked her tongue. “I’m waiting.”
I chuckled, raking my hair back before leaning on one of the stools, making me eye level with her chest.
“C’mere, baby.”
And that she did. Her fingers laced around the nape of my neck before she checked our surroundings and pulled me closer to her tits. I caged her in my arms, my hands slipping down the arch of her back as I took in the scent of her flowery perfume.
“I’m off in ten, wait for me.”
“Yes ma’am.” I smirked, respecting her wishes.
She grinned and released my hold, running back to the kitchen with kicking heels and a hop in her goddamn step.
I admired her ass one last time before bouncing the back of my fist against the bar to order a Jack and Coke.
The smooth whisky coated my throat, going down like water. This is exactly what I needed, every damn day of my fucking life, this is what I wanted.
No problems, no pain, no memories.I’m good. I’m alive. I’m here.
I ordered a couple of tequila shots before the bar closed and the familiar buzz of sweet serenity returned to me, the drunk settling into my conscious and relieving me from all the unwanted thoughts.
“Ready to go, Hunter?” The sugared sound of Britt’s voice caressed me as she leaned onto my lap and planted a wet kiss on my neck.
I threw back the rest of the liquor, planting my hand firm on her ass before sliding a five to the bartender and stepping out of the pub.
“Your place or mine?” She asked, pawing at my jacket like a kitten.
