The skies have darkened off to the west, stealing some of the daylight too soon and washing the field we’re crossing in a deep purple.

We’re not going to make it to the next settlement.

The rustle of brush blowing in the wind pulls my attention from the eerily darkening sky, and my throat tightens.

“Have you ever seen some shit like that?” I ask, my gaze skirting over the swaying vegetation with an alertness that has me on edge. I’ve heard of it raining down red streams, but I’ve managed to never see it before.

But this … feels like it is.

Moros huffs and looks over at me with blown pupils and a wildness that I’ve only ever seen once before.

“Once or twice,” he croaks out, teeth grinding and face reddening. “You might wanna …”

I swallow hard when he trails off, that gaze growing more intense by the breath.

He’s shaking for some reason, hands flexing at his sides, and it has nerves prickling across my neck.

“Want to what?” I whisper with my heartbeat pounding in my ears.

“Run.”

Chapter 13

Take me away

The present

Moros

“We should take himback!”

Shifting my weight to balance out the extra strapped to my back, I scoff at Amo. “Look at the fucking sky, kitten.”

Even if I could take Wilson back to the community, we don’t have enough time to get him there. He’s covered in dark blood I know is mostly his, and injuries I haven’t been able to consider treating yet.

I need to get him in the trees first.

“But, Moros,” Amo growls, the rest of his statement drowned out by the pain-filled groan in my ear.

“I’mfine,” Wilson groans but I can hear the strain in his voice.

“No,” I say to both of them.

“We need supplies and shit. Moros!”

Wrapping the chain around my forearm to help offset the weight of Wilson’s twitching body across my back, I grab hold andpull.

The amount of bodies I had to step on to reach the chain makes the distance shorter, yet the muscles in my arm burn as I lift, flinging my other arm up to grab higher and higher.

The rattle of our ascent pings around in my ears.

There’s not much time.

An alarm sounds in the distance, and I reach with all my strength to climb quicker.

The rain is gonna make all of this so much harder.

“C’mon.”
