At this point, he didn’t care if she was carrying his child or not. He’d make sure she was after she was married to him. There would be no separate beds between them. Sofia would be his every single night, and he couldn’t wait.
Her parents would be in England soon. The banns had to be read one more time, then they could have their wedding. He had changed his mind about marrying at his father’s country estate. There was a vicar in London that had agreed to do a small ceremony at Huntly Manor. He had informed Sofia of that on their walk earlier that day. She had not been pleased with his news.
Drew didn’t understand her. Hadn’t she always wanted to be his wife? Why was she fighting this every step of the way? Sometimes he didn’t understand women. In bed, it was so much easier. He knew how to bring a woman pleasure. Outside of it…things got a little more confusing. He had to get to the root of her issue. Preferably before they said their vows.
The wedding was less than a week away. They hadn’t had any actual time alone since that night he’d made love to her. He ached for her. Drew never thought he would ever be so gone for a woman before. Sofia was different, had always been that way. He should have realized sooner what she might come to mean to him. Instead, he had done his best to push her away. Had all those years of shoving her to the side come back to bite him in the arse?
It was time that he spoke to her again without an audience. Lucky for him, he knew just how to do that. He had grown up visiting Huntly Manor regularly, and he knew what bedchamber Sofia had been assigned. He would pay a call on her when everyone else was asleep.
He checked the time. Which should be soon. He had a few things to do beforehand, but soon he would wake her with a kiss. Hopefully, after that they would find some more pleasurable things to do with their time. With that idea firmly inside of his head, Drew left his apartment. The townhouse he had purchased wasn’t ready for him to move into yet. It would be after the wedding, but it would be sparsely furnished. He wanted Sofia to choose items she would like and make it into a home they would both love.
Drew decided to walk to Huntly Manor. It would give him time to form a plan and give him some much needed exercise. It was the only way, in recent days, he was able to work out his frustrations. Thankfully, he would be able to set those aside after the wedding. Every single one of them could be set at Sofia’s feet.
Once he reached the manor, he considered how he should enter. Perhaps he shouldn’t go in through the front door. That might wake someone else up and he didn’t wish to explain himself. Instead, he went to the back of the house and smiled. The trellis outside of her bedchamber was perfect. He could climb in and slip inside her window, which was also open. The humid evening made everything easier that night.
Drew climbed up and then slid inside. The room was illuminated by the full moon. He studied her asleep in her bed. She thrashed back and forth, then moaned. What was she dreaming about? Could she be plagued with the same needs as he had been? That made him smile even wider. Then it shouldn’t be too difficult to persuade her into a night of pleasure.
He sat on the bed and caressed her cheek. Drew wanted her awake and fully aware of what was going on. It should be mutual desire and need that drove them that night. He would not have her claiming she had not wanted him. Not that she had denied how much she had enjoyed herself that one night they had. But he still needed her to be cognizant of what they did. It was only right.
“Sofia,” he whispered. “Wake up, pet.”
Her eyelids fluttered open. “Drew?”
“Were you expecting someone else?” He lifted a brow.
“Perhaps I was,” she said in a belligerent tone. “At least someone more preferable than you.”
“Impossible.” He scoffed. “No other man will ever do for you.” He tapped her nose playfully. “It’s me and no one else.”
She sighed. “I’m starting to realize that.” She rolled away from him. “Now go away. I was trying to sleep until you rudely interrupted me. I was having the best dream.”
“Darling,” he drawled. “Why settle for a dream when the real thing is ready and willing to serve you?”
She turned to face him. “You come with too many strings. I’m going to have to decline your offer.” Sofia lifted her hand and shooed him. “Don’t make me wake up Aunt Rubina and Uncle Noah. They won’t be pleased to find you here.” Then she smiled slyly. “My mother and father arrived early too.”
He groaned. Her parents would make a fuss. It didn’t matter that they would be married soon. They would be displeased to find him in her bedchamber before they said their vows. The duke and duchess would only add to that disappointment. It was his turn to sigh. “All right,” he agreed. “I’ll go. But soon you will be my wife. There won’t be any reason for us to be apart.”
‘I know,” she mumbled. “But until then, I’d like some distance.”
He hated that she wanted any at all. Drew blamed himself. He was an arse, and he would have to discern the best way to make that up to her.
