“I got your towels right there. Let me know if you need anything else,” he advised her while preparing to leave the bathroom to offer her some privacy.
She grabbed his hand and halted him. “Can you stay, please?”
He nodded and took a seat on the ledge of the tub. Remedy walked right over to him and stood between his legs so he could aid her with getting undressed. The sight of the bruises and scars all over her body angered him, and he couldn’t help but to clench his jaw. He slipped her out of the sweatpants she had on beforeproceeding to do the same with the long-sleeved shirt. Her small bump was right in his face, and before she could stop him, he leaned in and sat a kiss on her stomach. He felt her body tense up, but eventually, she relaxed and sat her hands on his broad shoulders.
“You’re gonna be an amazing mother,” he said to her as they locked eyes with each other.
“Kross, we don’t even know?”
“I know, but I’m hoping it is mine,” he interjected and told her.
A heavy sigh drifted out of Remedy. “Me too.”
He assisted her into the tub, allowing all the tension and pain she harbored in her body to be alleviated once she sank into the warm water that was practically overflowing with bubbles.
“Can I tell you something? Can you promise me it won’t get to nobody else?” Kross asked her as she undid the bun her hair was in to allow her curly tresses to fall.
Remedy nodded. “Of course, K.”
Kross pursed his lips as he felt a tug on his heart, assuring him that Remedy was the right person to confide in. “I found out that Aniyis may not be my son.” The revelation was so shocking, it prompted Remedy to snap her head over her shoulder and look at Kross with her eyes widened.
“What? How?”
In response, he shrugged his shoulders. “He might belong to some nigga named Scrap from out here. Cassie was gonna get the test done without me knowing once I came home, but she ended up dying before she could. While you were missing, I finally got the test done myself, but a nigga can’t seem to find the courage to open the results,” he chuckled bitterly.
Remedy knew of Scrap and his reputation. She would have never expected him to be tied into a mess of drama with Kross’ex-girlfriend. Scrap was pretty cutthroat, so she wouldn’t put it past him if he was the one behind Cassie’s death.
“Do you think he killed her?”
Kross ran his hands down his face. “I know he did, which is why I gotta put that pussy-ass nigga down. I don’t give a fuck if it’s the last thing I do. That nigga gotta die.”
Remedy saw the fire in his eyes as his jaws clenched in anger. Cassie was a soft spot for him and would always be. Remedy understood that. However, she didn’t want his search for revenge to cost him his life.
“Kross, I don’t think that’s the right thing to do. Scrap is very dangerous, and so are the people he surrounds himself with. Look what Tone did to me. I don’t want anything happening to you.”
“I hear you, love. I really do, but there’s certain shit I just can’t stand for. I gotta do what I gotta do.”
In that moment, Remedy knew there was no convincing him otherwise. All she could do was pray for his safety. A short stint of silence filled the room as they both processed the heavy conversation. Remedy looked up at him with her eyes filled with hope and love.
“The results don’t matter for Aniyis. He’s your son, and Cassie trusted the right man to raise him with her. He doesn’t know anyone else as his father besides you. Don’t take that away from him.”
It was always Kross’ plan to never disrupt Aniyis’ life with the harsh truth if he turned out not to be his father, but hearing it from Remedy confirmed that he was doing the right thing. He nodded his head, letting her know that he understood and felt the same way.
After Remedy’s bath, Kross helped her out of the tub and into a warm, fresh towel. She sprouted onto her tippy toes and pecked his lips with a light kiss. His phone lit up on thebathroom counter, garnering both of their attention. He reached over and grabbed it before letting out a heavy breath.
“I got the results,” he said to her, causing Remedy’s heart to plunge to the pit of his stomach.
They had been awaiting them all day, and as much as she tried not to overthink and become filled with anxiety, she couldn’t help it.
“You wanna open it?” he asked, extending the phone over to her.
Remedy shook her head, pushing the phone away. “You do it.”
Kross took on the heaviness of reading the results by tapping the email notification that was on his phone. Stress washed over him as his eyes scanned the screen.
“Possibility of paternity, 99.99 percent,” he read aloud, causing Remedy to clench her chest in shock.
She snatched the phone away from him so she could read the results herself, and sure enough, Kross was confirmed to be the father of the child growing inside of her. With this confirmation, she could feel all the turmoil, pain, and anger she had within her dissipate into thin air. God had granted yet another miracle. Tone thought he took everything from her, but little did he know, he pushed her into her destiny and into the arms of the man God sought for her to be with. She was so overwhelmed with emotion, all she could do was sob in pure joy and happiness.
