Korvin slowly pulled his fingers from inside her, the sensation threatening to make her come yet again. She felt him harden as well, linked to her as her body reacted, her runes tingling and moving within her skin.
She looked up at him with a sex-sated gaze then followed his eyes to their entwined bodies and noticed something odd. His pigment. His runes. She could see them glowing ever so slightly inside his clothes. And they seemed to be shifting. Moving in unison with her own.
Korvin’s gaze abruptly went cool, almost panicked.
“No. No, no, no! This cannot be happening,” he muttered in shock.
“What? What is it?”
“I thought it was only the Admani Pigment.”
“You mean that powerful ink stuff they gave us. Is that what just happened? Did it just do that to us?”
“Yes, perhaps,” he said, his demeanor calming a bit. “That may be all it was.” The concern, however, was still in his gaze. “But perhaps something more.”
Nyota wasn’t sure what to make of his cryptic words, but whatever had just happened, she was quite certain she wanted it again. And much, much more of it.
“What do you mean, something more?” she asked, leaning into him.
He pulled back, quickly tucking his still-hard erection into his trousers. “I-I need time to be sure.”
“Are you okay?”
“I am fine. I am always fine. But we should not have done this. Not here. Not now.”
“What’s going on, Korvin? Talk to me.”
“Do not worry yourself, Nyota. Just carry on as before and let me worry about it. We must not lose focus. Carelessness will get us captured again. Or worse.”
She sure as hell didn’t want that to happen, no matter how hot their little tryst might have been.
“So, what do we do, then?”
“Do? We make shelter. We eat. We sleep. Come sunrise, we move out, fast and quiet. We have a mission to complete. My general is out there, and we cannot afford distractions.”
She followed close as he led the way, watching him with piqued curiosity as he did exactly what he said he would. He found them shelter just as the sun began to set. He laid out a small assortment of food to eat. Then he helped her focus her power to ignite a small fire around which he built a stone barrier, focusing the heat back towards them while blocking the flames from view.
Then, despite both of their bodies wanting much more of the delightful sample they’d had earlier, they restlessly drifted off into an uneasy sleep.
CHAPTERTWENTY-TWO
Korvin was up before the sun, quick to rise and get ready. The abrupt lack of his body’s warmth against her roused Nyota from her slumber. She rolled over, watching him slide into a clean tunic in the dim pre-dawn light.
He was beautiful, the solid curves and lines of his musculature clear even without full sun. His runes, once a mystery to her, now almost made sense in a way, the lines gracefully connecting them, tracing all across his body, the runes themselves strategically placed enhancing all sorts of aspects of his physique.
She thought back to the previous day’s little tryst and wondered,What does the one nestled just above his cock do?
Korvin glanced at her, and his look told her at once she would not be getting an answer to that question anytime soon. Something had shifted overnight. He was all business. Driven and single-minded in his purpose. Gone were any signs of passion and lack of control she had seen the day before.
But somethinghadchanged. It was subtle, but she’d spent enough time with him by now to perceive the shift, and it went beyond whatever their little tryst of the other day was. There was a little something in his gaze. Not raw lust or want, but something else. Curiosity, mostly. Pensive wonder, cautious and perhaps a little aroused, but all restrained by his years of training and self-control.
The rune on her chest twinged slightly and she could have sworn he flinched as it did. But that was impossible, wasn’t it?
In this strange alien world, it seemed anything was possible, so who could say? Something was up. With them both. What it was didn’t matter, at least not at the moment. He was right about one thing. They had to go, and that was that.
Nyota rose to a seated position, peeling off the top she’d slept in and rummaging through her pack for her spare. They traveled light, but not so light that they didn’t have one to wear and one to wash.
Her nipples hardened to twin peaks in the cool air. She felt the chill, but also a flash of that familiar arousal that seemed to be constantly lingering just below the surface lately. It was odd, actually. She had always had a healthy libido, but this was becoming almost distracting at this point.
