“I’m doing you a favor,” I remind him.
“This isn’t about favors, Shelby. This is a moral issue for me. The decision to have a baby is a two-person discussion. The fact that you’re even asking tells me condoms are still off the table. If he didn’t want to prevent it when you had sex, then I won’t prevent it now.”
“It’s my body!” I snap.
“And it would be his child. If he said no, it’s no.”
I blink back tears. I shouldn’t be frustrated since I knew what his answer would be.
At least he’s a man of his word. I’m not the only one he’s given this speech to. Everyone in town knows how he feels.
“I’ll find someone else to watch Riley.”
Reaching out, I grab his arm. “No. You don’t have to do that. I may think that you’re a dick right now, but I love her, and she’ll be safe with me.”
“A dick?” His words are low and growled.
The sound sends a shiver through me that starts at my head and ends in my crotch. My eyes widen when he steps closer.
“A dick,” he repeats, a disbelieving chuckle shakes his chest.
My eyes drop from his grin when he backs away. My eyes widen to the point of pain when I notice the bulge at the front of his pants.
Holy shit!
I did that!
Reaching out, Doc takes my chin between his thumb and forefinger. “I’ll be back at seven. Riley will have a spare key in her bag.”
At a loss for words, I just nod.
What the fuck just happened?
CHAPTER FIFTEEN
Shelby
Groaning, I lift the brown bag onto the countertop.
“I don’t know about you, muffin, but I’m beat.”
“I’m okay.”
Who knew a six-year-old had so much energy?
I take the eggs out of the paper bag and hand them over to the small outstretched hand.
“Thank you.” I smile.
Together, Riley and I unpack groceries until the only thing left is a sucker. Handing over the candy, I throw the spare house key to the side.
“Let’s make your dad some food.”
Slowly, my mood had shifted. My anger melted away as I continued through my day, until I left work feeling resigned.
On my way to collect Riley, I’d sent her dad a quick text, but my apology went unanswered. I’d been angry this morning, but I shouldn’t have taken it out on Leo.
I can’t force my mystery man to use protection, as I don’t even know who he is. I’m not traveling to the next town to getPlan B, for many reasons, but the main one being that it’s not practical.
