“What?”
“Your girl sent me the edits of the photos she took of me today. She spent a lot of time on them.”
I shake my head. “She already admitted you guys were conspiring, so it won’t work anymore.”
“Did it work at the party though?”
I give him a look, and he laughs.
“What?” Waylon asks when he looks up.
“Colt is down really fucking bad over a woman, and it’s fucking beautiful to watch.”
“The photographer?” Waylon asks.
“The very one.” Tobias grins. “And now he has to sit around knowing she’s seeing all of us naked.”
“True. I have my shoot with her this week after we get back. Mac’s excited about it.” Waylon wears a massive grin on his face because the man’s wife is obsessed with him. I feel my heart twist a little. It’s a lot like watching Ben and Violet. The easy way the two of them seem to make things work. Wishing it was that way for us.
“I bet Joss is too. Especially if she’s seen that drone shot the tabloids got of you and Mac on the beach.”
“Tobias.” Ben sighs.
“Oh, come on. I’ve waited forever for this. And that it’s her? It’s too fucking good to resist. Let me have my fun,” Tobias grumps in return.
“Like I’ve said before… the payback for this? It’s going to be painful.” I glare at him.
“Worth it to see you squirm over a woman.”
I shake my head and take another bite of my food because I wouldn’t take the bait.
“You guys are good though?” Ben asks, glancing up at me and I can already guess what’s going through his head.
“We’re good. Better than, honestly,” I say with more confidence than I feel because I have to be.
“And what about for this game?”
Ben knows what a lot of the other guys here don’t. That tomorrow we’re playing a divisional rival, but also the quarterback who took my spot at the college I attended before Highland. The same one who took my ex-girlfriend and then married her.
“Good.”
“Kate working?” He raises a brow.
“Who’s Kate?” Tobias asks, and I hate Ben a little for mentioning it now.
“A reporter,” I answer, the shortness evident in my tone.
“An ex?” He grins.
“Ancient history.”
“Like the photographer?”
“Nothing like the photographer.”
“Interesting…”
It will be. Because Kate had been leaving comments on my social posts all week and making little comments after our interviews in the past that left me thinking she wanted more than that. And while it’s satisfying to know she regrets her mistake; I don’t want drama. The rivalry between our teams is enough without having to worry about layering that with more complications. And I definitely don’t want anything that’s going to rock the fragile new ground Joss and I have managed to cover. I just want to put this team down and this game behind me so that we’re one step closer to bringing a trophy home, and I’m another day closer to having Joss again before she leaves.
