“Or I get accused of cradle robbing their favorite quarterback.”
“The age gap is not that big Joss, ask me how I know. Plus June was older than Johnny, remember? And look how they worked out.”
I sigh. I knew Violet would do this. Make it seem like Colt and I could be together. That we had a chance in hell of making this work. I’m not the cold-hearted bitch I was when I was younger. I’ve somehow softened with time and experience. Or maybe just with missing him in my life. I don’t hate the idea of a relationship anymore. Especially since the last year has given me a lot of time alone to reflect. But there was a difference between a relationship theoretically and the reality of a relationship with Colt.
“What’s with all the gear-turning going on?” She gives me a meaningful look.
“Nothing. Just thinking about what you said. Trying to decide if you’re crazy for thinking it’s possible or if I’m crazy for not giving it serious consideration. One of us is definitely crazy though.”
She rolls her eyes.
“Just finish your coffee and get some rest. We can revisit it when you’re not a zombie. Harper and Scarlett want to get together later. So maybe they’ll have thoughts.”
TWENTY-TWO
Colt
As I windup my cooldowns on the field, Tobias comes and sits next to me to do his own.
“I’m going to get naked for your girl tonight. She’s even taking me out to dinner after.” He grins at me as he stretches his leg out.
“She’s not my girl.” I shake my head, stretching my arm across my chest.
“Oh yeah? So you don’t mind if I shoot my shot with her then? See if she likes the preview enough to want the whole thing.”
“The fuck you will,” I snap at him.
Tobias stops his workout and turns to look at me slowly, devious amusement spreading across his face.
“That’s what I fucking thought.”
“Stay out of it and stay away from her.”
“Listen. You’re Priest for a reason. You show this kind of interest in a woman, especially one who seems to be the opposite of the sweet soft-spoken blue-eyed blonde fifties-homemaker type I expected to see you with, and I get curious.”
“Why does it matter?”
“Cause you’re not one of us. You’re not me and Xander. You’re a get married, have babies, and build the picket-fence type.”
“Or you just think I am. Also, Xander is looking like the picket-fence type these days.”
“Always happy to be surprised. And true. Now that Xander is down bad, I can always use a new wingman. There are a couple of places where the women in the VIP sections are always hot as fuck, we could check them out if you’re up for it.”
“No thanks.”
“Because you’re already involved with a tattooed photographer?”
“You’re not gonna let this drop, are you?”
“No. I think I like her for you. She’s feisty and loud. I bet she drives you insane. It’s perfect.”
“I’m glad I have your seal of approval.”
“You should be. I’m shit at finding someone myself, but for other people? I can spot them a mile away. Xander and Harper. My brother and his wife Wren. The second I saw them together I knew. Took a little longer than expected with Xander and Harper, but they got there.”
“Yeah well, like Waylon and Ben said, Joss and I have been there. It didn’t end with us walking down the aisle. Obviously.”
“Why not?”
