In a second, I was swimming in a sea of darkness. I felt as though I was blind until Abbey removed her hand, and the light came on.

Confusion and frustration churned in her big blue eyes.

Sam crouched down and took Abbey’s hand. “You didn’t see anything in Layla’s future, did you?”

She shook her head. “Something is off.”

“Does any of this relate to the nightmares you’ve been having?” Sam asked her.

Abbey shrugged. “Maybe. I’m not sure.”

My voice trembled. “But you saw something in Rianne’s future?”

If I’d never met Sam Mason, I would have never believed Abbey could see the future. Then again, I’d seen Dr. Vieira before I’d even met the man, but my visions were attributed to me ingesting Sam’s blood.

“I only saw one thing, and I can’t tell you why or when,” Abbey said. “Usually, I can.”

Sam kissed her hand. “It’s okay. You can’t carry the weight of the world on your shoulders.”

She frowned. “I have to.” She sounded tired and old.

My heart broke for her. She was way too young to be worried about the future. She should be at school, making friends, going to birthday parties, and enjoying all the fun stuff that kids did.

“What was the one thing you saw?” Rianne asked, appearing to be more alert now.

Abbey looked to Sam for help.

“You can tell us,” he said.

She tangled her fingers together, worrying her bottom lip, and kept her focus on Sam. “Rianne is going to kill Layla.”

Nonsensewent through my head while Rianne laughed nervously.

“How?” I asked. “Don’t answer that.” I didn’t want to know.

A phone rang, zapping the tension that had filled the room to the ceiling.

Rising, Sam plucked his phone out of his cargo pants. “Yeah. Ten-four. We’ll be right down.” He set his green eyes on me. “Layla, I need you to come with me. Abbey, can you get Dr. Vieira?”

She left without answering him.

I was still in shock from her revelation.

“Is she always right?” Rianne asked Sam.

He shrugged. “Things have been off with her lately.”

“Can I have a moment alone with my sister?” I wasn’t exactly asking.

He gave me a somewhat sad smile, as though he’d been affected by Abbey’s prediction of my impending doom. “I’ll be out there.”

Once Rianne and I were alone, I went to my sister and hugged her.

She squeezed the hell out of me. “I’d never been so scared in all my life.”

I dropped down next to her. “I’m so glad you're back.” I swiped a hand over her hair.

“Do you believe Abbey?” She sounded scared.
