Rianne poked her head in. “Come on.”
“I’m good,” I assured Harley.
Harley hooked her arm in mine. “I’m here if you ever need me.”
“I’ll keep that in mind. Right now, I need my other sister alive.”
In less than five minutes, Harley was ushering Rianne and me into the war room, which looked like a movie theater.
Webb was leaning against a long conference table in front of a movie screen. His brows were pinched over his blue eyes, his brown hair was pulled back into a low ponytail, and his jaw was clean-shaven. He waved his hand at the empty row of chairs. “Please have a seat.”
I wondered where Sam was as I lowered myself into a cushioned theater-style chair. Rianne did the same while Harley went up to Webb.
The two whispered about something, then Harley hurried out.
After Webb introduced himself to Rianne, he studied both of us for the longest time.
“Well,” Rianne said. “Why are we here?” Her tone was snarky, yet I could hear the shakiness underneath.
Webb was calm, a stark contrast to when he’d about taken off my head in that interrogation room.
The side door squeaked open, and Sam and Tripp waltzed in. Both were dressed in a black cargo uniforms, seemingly ready for battle with daggers strapped to their legs. My heart went pitter-patter at the sheer sight of Sam. I thought I was attracted to his green eyes, black hair, strong jaw, and many other physical attributes, but I was mistaken. A man in uniform with weapons clinging to him shot heat straight to my clit.
Rianne emitted a low noise as if she was ready to snap at Sam. She was probably even more irate now that she knew I’d slept with him. “The sandy-blond one is even more of a dick than Sam.”
Tripp grinned. “You know I can hear you.”
Rianne flipped him off.
I gave her a sidelong glance, but considering we weren’t there to discuss our hatred or love for vampires, I made a mental note to ask her about Tripp later.
“Enough,” Webb barked at Rianne. “You’re our guest here. Don’t give me a reason to treat you like you're not.”
And the scary Webb was back.
Rianne sat up straighter and huffed.
Sam and Tripp took up posts off to the side of Webb, hands behind their backs, shoulders tight, spines straight, and focused on their leader.
“Why did you want to see us?” I asked, hoping to take the tension in the room down a few levels.
“We need you to look through some pictures to identify if one of the dead bodies we found at your neighbor’s house is your sister.”
I sucked in air as pain spread through my chest. I couldn’t lose another loved one. I wasn’t sure if I would survive. The loss of Mom and Dad was still gut-wrenching.
Rianne slapped a hand over her mouth.
Sam regarded me with sad eyes.
No. No. No.My stomach churned like a violent storm at sea.
I gripped Rianne’s thigh. “Easy. We don’t know anything yet.” I should take my own advice, but that storm brewing in my stomach was getting worse the longer we waited for Webb to speak.
Webb ambled off to the side and pointed a presentation clicker at the computer sitting on the table.
A picture of our neighbor’s house brightened the screen.
“Kraft and Ben have been surveilling this house all night, and they’ve finally gotten eyes on Roman coming and going.”
